NEW FEATURE: More belt levels!!!

One of the most requested features on Mahalo Answers since launch has been more belt levels. While getting to yellow belt is fairly easy, and Green is not so hard, it does take a decent amount of time to get to purple and brown.

We've added a new feature today which doubles number of levels in the system. Between belt levels you will obtain a "tip" or "stripe." These are very easy to recognize when you look at a user icon. For example my icon currently shows a purple belt with a brown tip indicating that I'm a purple belt but half way to brown belt.

Yes, we understand that we now have two types of tips in the system (belt and a gratuity).... sorry for that.

Also, we could have done a bunch of belt levels of various colors but we wanted to keep it traditional. We do understand the argument for doing more colors of tips, however our goal here is to have each level mean something. Right now here is what the belt mean in my mind:

White: "Hello world!"
Yellow: "I'm not only here, I've actually done something!"
Green: "I'm new, but I've done a bunch different things and I understand what we're doing here."
Purple: "You know me, you know my avatar and I'm not going anywhere."
Brown: "Hello, I've not only been around here a long time, but I've had my work checked and I'm the real deal."
Black: "I'm here to help... what can I do for you?"

The tips will now show that you are closer to the next level.
The tips are intended to show your *transition* not that you've arrived a level.

What do you think the belt levels stand for?

White =
Yellow =
Green =
Purple =
Brown =
Black =

Welcome to Mahalo Answers. As the founder and CEO sometimes I put announcements in the Q&A format.

Forgive me. :-)

Since we don't have any way to communicate as a community apart from Q&A, we have evolved the convention that anything other than a straight question is flagged in caps, such as Jason's "NEW FEATURE:...",

Since everything is still eligible for answers and getting a best answer selected, it's also become the tradition to throw in a little side question along with these non-questions.

This is a "Here is what I think, what is your opinion?" question. I welcome the chance to compare perceptions with the asker, and have no problem understanding his intention.

What do you think the belt levels stand for?

White = My friend said I should sign up for this.
Yellow = Oh cool this is like achievments on the X Box
Green = Maybe I can be of some help to people
Purple = Is there a widget I can use so I don't have to keep Mahalo Answers up all the time?
Brown = I need a job (or bigger tips).
Black = Been here since the Alpha test!

Maybe you could just refer to the belt tip as a stripe to eliminate confusion?

To me:

White = I just got here. I'm an unknown commodity.

Yellow = I've done a bit, and I know my way around a little. I may have tons of professional knowledge but no one here has seen much of it yet.

Green = I'm making an effort to answer questions. I have a bit of a track record so you can see if my answers are worthwhile or not.

Purple = I've answered lots of questions. You probably are familiar with me by now, and I have some trustworthyiness.

Brown = No mistaking who I am! I'm all over the place here, so many of my thoughts and opinions are out there. Chances are when I answer a question, it will be at the very least helpful, if not the best answer.

Black = Take it to the bank. My answers are excellent and I'm known as a helpful person. If I were an actor, I'd have an Oscar. (I think, because we don't have a black belt yet!)

White = Hey, I just registered like yesterday.
Yellow = I've stuck around long enough to do a small amount of stuff!
Green = I like this place, I think I'll stick around and see where this goes.
Purple = I'm here to stay and help.
Brown = I'm not your average answer giver.
Black = I know my stuff, ask me anything.

White = death, skeletons, ghosts
Yellow = power
Green = faith
Purple = justice
Brown = excrement
Black = evil, doom

Of course, this has little bearing on the people earning the belts. But that's what the colors mean to me. I have no interest in the Oriental Martial Arts.

And tips, well, that means tips. I don't get it with reference to belts.

What do I think the belt levels stand for?

Not so serious version:

White = Help! I'm a complete newbie!
Yellow = I'm a newbie.
Green = I'm no Darcy, but I'm pretty hot stuff!
Purple = I spend way too much time on Mahalo Answers!
Brown = I am Darcy. Tremble before my awesomeness!
Black = I am God.

The tips haven't had time to take on a meaning for me yet. Other than "I'm an X, but nearly a Y".

Slightly more serious version:

White = I'm new around here. For all you know, I may be:
a) The next Einstein
b) Unable to write coherent sentences.
c) Possibly both of the above.

Yellow = Either:
a) I like what I see here, and I'm giving it a good try
b) I am a spammer.

Green = Either:
a) I write great answer on selected topics
b) I write a lot of answers on lots of topics

Purple = Either:
a) I write great answers on lots of topics
b) I have been here a heck of a long time, and write an awful lot

Brown = Either:
a) I have Google-fu incomprehensible to the average person
b) I am extraordinarily knowledgeable and helpful
c) I am locked in a basement at Mahalo

Black = Either:
a) I have incredible Google-fu and wide ranging knowledge, and am tremendously helpful, and extremely productive
b) I have been locked in the basement at Mahalo for a very long time

However I do need to get out more.

I think the double use of the word "tips" is fine. They are not really related to one another and when in conversation i think one could easily tell the difference in the two. I understand the want of the word stripes, but really it's just semantics.

White belt- Wow, i can get paid to be here and make people listen to me?

Yellow belt- That was easy, I hope my posts get voted as the best answer!

Green belt- Huh, there are a lot of people on here looking for some pretty random information...good thing i've got some time to kill :)

Purple belt- Yeah, I've answered a bunch of questions, but I've actually learned a lot of things too....who knew?

Brown belt- If I don't log in at least once a day, my friends will wonder where I am. I have a duty to fulfill you know.

Black belt- I'm not in it for the Mahalo dollars, I actually enjoy it here, and they like me...they really like me!

White = I'm new on the Island of Mahalo, you can call me fresh milk.
Yellow = I'm just warming up, and know a thing or two about bananas.
Green = I'm cool as a cucumber, and have a few good answers to prove it.
Purple = I'm an answering grape, and my answers have a juiciness factor.
Brown = I'm a rich answerer, and my answers are sweet like hot fudge.
Black = I'm a master of answering, and distinguished like dark chocolate. I'm here to help or have made it to the hall of fame.

Without looking at anyone's answer (except the one in the answer):
White: "Let me introduce myself and get oriented."
Yellow: "I have the basics down, and can begin to really participate."
Green: "I've got time and energy invested in this, and am an active member of the community."
Brown: "I've gone where no one else has gone before, and making a path for others."
Black: ...Darcy, report back when you get there, will ya?

Yea! This is overdue, and I'm glad you've done this! Hopefully it makes the leveling process less time consuming.

White: I'm brand new, and I may not be around here in a few weeks
Yellow: I've here, and I'll probably stay. I'm doing my best to help!
Green: I'm not going anywhere. I answer questions well and ask some too.
Purple: Ask a question and you'll get a quality answer from me!
Brown: I'm on here everyday for hours. I'm the real deal
Black: I have no life, and I all Mahalo Answer members know who I am and look up to me!
