Too bad this is voted 'unhelpful', as I think this is a serious remark, so I've countered ut 'helpful'. Last few days a spammer-group with about 10 accounts found out about Mahalo and started to spam for video (illegal) download sites.
This new 'feature' is giving them a 'home free' ticket.
We've seen it before at Mahalo with anonymous 'helpful' voting, we've seen it at Conundrum. It doesn't work and gets abused.
There are many new features on Mahalo I like, but this is not one of them.

We haven't had a spam problem at Mahalo thanks to our tools, and I don't think this feature will open us up to one. If things are not interesting folks will vote them down and they will only be on the homepage for a couple of minutes.

we can also add a captcha for anonymous questions if there is a major spam attack.

spammers look for places they can operate freely. Once they realize that all their work gets deleted in one click by an administrator they tend to move on. I haven't seen spam in the system for a long time, and the few times I have it's gone instantly.

Nothing to worry about... also, we can turn off anonymous questions at any point in time if 100 people decided to go crazy on Mahalo Answers.

I love the anonymous avatar!
This feature will be interesting to see in practice. I can't wait to see it unfold and the creative ways Mahalo Answers users try out the asking anonymous feature and how users respond to questions asked anonymously.

I was supposed to ask about the spam control but since @jasoncalacanis already answered that one, then this will be perfect!

Nice idea Mahalo! :D

Okay, this is my anonymous image... ^^

I was so happy because @lesliec picked me as the best answer in this question http://www.mahalo.com/answers/halloween/would-you-take-a-job-in-a-haunted-house-and-what-character-would-you-want-to-play, because of this picture! :D Why anonymous you ask? Cause you still can't see my face. :)

Second names are lame. MySpace had a gazillion of them. I had 5 for test accounts. Be who you are, or be totally anon. Don't pretend to be someone you're not.

Anon is ok, to post things you do not feel comfortable posting, but to create a new entire account? Really! (I mean... REALLY!)

*points to newest questions and frowns*... 90% of them are anonymous and 50% are so silly I have no desire to answer or even read them.

This was my concern when it was brought up as an option a few days back. Whether 3 uninteresting votes gets the question removed or not there is still a vast increase in ridiculous spam questions today.

I may be new, but I already dislike this change. I've seen much complaint on the conundrum questions squeezing out real mahalo ones recently, I don't think spam questions squeezing out both is any better. It doesn't appear to be being used as intended but misused as expected.

So my anonymous question would be..
Will this change will turn mahalo into yahoo answers?

...and my anonymous answer is yes. :P

We have a new design for Mahalo Answers coming on November 16th that will split your default view into most popular, unanswered, your questions/answers, your friends questions/answers, questions you might be interested in and most recent questions. This will help solve any one type of question taking over the homepage.

On conundrum we lowered the default tip to M$1 and that seems to have solved the problem.

On anonymous questions I think the spike was day one, today there are only 2-3 on the homepage. I think this feature will settle in to being 10-20% of our questions.

Give it 20 days before passing judgement is my rule.

I think being able to ask anonymous questions is great. Sometimes you have questions you want to ask but don't because they're too embarrassing to ask. This won't be the case now since you will be anonymous. Just in case there should be a way to track the question back to the person who asked it.

Sometimes I come across questions that I would have an answer for, but I'm not comfortable having my answer on the "public record".

I am absolutely thrilled that you will be allowing us to post anonymous questions. I feel that this way, if the answers really stink or are unuseful, we don't have to feel pressured to tip. In addition, I have several questions that are not things I want linked to my online persona, but they are seriously important to me.

Oh look! You guys made little Dread Pirate Roberts avatars for us! Marvelous, simply mah-velous. Anonymous questions seem like the logical next step to making this Q&A site a real valuable resource for users. Love it.

But might I make a suggestion?......

Require anonymous askers to post a mandatory tip (even just 50 Mcents) with their questions. It may help with the spam control and flooding.

I do understand how valuable it is for people to be able to answer without even logging in (one-stop shopping for all your question needs!), but keep this option in mind if the flooding becomes unreasonable. :)

Otherwise, excellent! I think this is a great idea and is going to improve the dynamic of the community, opening it up to lots of intriguing questions!

@philipy, that's easy. Make it a requirement that anonymous questions must tip a minimum of 50 Mcents. Nowhere (that I can find!) on our profile does it show when/how much we tip.

The grande fromages of Mahalo will know, but they already have the ability to see who "anonymous" really is anyway. Piece of cake!
