For the first two weeks, I was so addicted I spent really really a lot of time, which took most of my online time and also took a big bite of my family time.
Now that I have a mid belt level, I have balanced my time spent on Mahalo with my other activities and spend roughly around 1-2 hours a day.
In the begining I answered a few space related questions from @davpamn which took considerable time refreshing my knowledge and also do further study.
Answering questions within an hour and voting are good ways to rake a lot of points. While answering questions with good tips, put in some extra effort to get the best answer, and you would be rewarded additional points and good tip as well. Voting for best answers is good, because you also get to read a lot of answers and learn what might not know or verify the answers with what you know.
And also in the beginning I answered most of the questions (Mc25) with just text and links - no pictuures. Mainly because, Mahalo doesnt allow uploading images. Not sure of the issues, but I would still like to be able to upload images directly to mahalo instead of using a third party site.
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/mahalo-answers-suggestions/what-happens-if-the-reference-links-in-many-of-the-answers-dont-exist-anymore-does-mahalo-caches-the-content-from-those-links
Now I use flikr to provide images I create or copy from other source.
Bottom line is that I really like answering and reading Q&A on this site and hope to continue contributing and in the process improve my knowledge. In general I like all the categories (GK is always interesting and helpful), but my favorite is Science and Technology related questions.
I think we need to have addtional belt levels between purple and purple/brown tip.

It will be give a better motivation than 3000 point gap between purple and brown tip.

It took me a lot longer to reach purple, I think maybe two months. I switched my avatar I remember right about then. I remember when I was a yellow belt - that I really worked to improve my responses and to add relevant information (photos, source info, unique bits of knowledge) and that I tried to read lots of other more senior members' winning responses to learn more about 'best' answer protocol.
I also answer questions that fall within my personal area of knowledge and interests. I find that I can really provide much more energy to these responses and therefore help the questioner out and perhaps in the end win best answer - or maybe get a tip from another member for the effort.
Congrats again @the_brain. Hope the tendon injury is feeling better soon.

For others I would recommend just be active on Mahalo and you will get a lot of points before you know it. Answer questions, ask questions, and vote on best answers. These are all good ways to move up in the belt rankings.
For extra points, answer new questions within an hour of when they are posted and you get 4 points. Also make sure your answers are good because if they are chosen best, you get 10 points.

Just got a purple belt today. It took me 19 days. I'm curious how long it took other people. Let me know.
Let me know what was the most important thing you had to do to reach a purple belt.
Any tips that would help other people reach it.

Cool. Good stats. I think the one think I need to do more is ask more questions. it'll give me some points when I award the best answer and help people get more information. Is there anything important that you think you need to do to earn a brown belt?

I am planning to spend my MT (mahalo time, not mountain) focusing on mahalo pages and also answering questions/good tips that needs some good effort. Of course keep voting for best answers.

Wow congrats on earning your purple belt in such quick fashion, and welcome to MA - but more importantly - it seems that you've really been answering questions well and embracing the idea of the MA community - that's excellent.

Thank you for your sympathy with my tendon injury and nice wording when saying "I can really provide much more energy". Energy is a great word for what needs to be in answers.

I guess, it took 3 weeks for me. I was doing answering a lot of questions and was spending a lot of time. Now I have so many things to do and now answer less than I used to be. Thinking to spend more time this week to get the purple tip.

Congrats on getting the purple belt so fast! I think it took me about 6 weeks to get the purple belt. I just answered a lot of questions and that how I got most of my points. For others I would recommend just be active on Mahalo and you will get a lot of points before you know it. Answer questions, ask questions, and vote on best answers. These are all good ways to move up in the belt rankings.

You need to get a lot more points that's for sure. I have been working hard and I have not even got the brown belt tip yet.
Also you actually have to pass a test to get the brown and the black belt. I don't think it's a hard test, but it just shows that it takes a little more to get a brown belt.
