Yes! Video or pictures is extremely important, and there is nearly always a good opportunity for it! Movies can have trailers, games can have hands-on, How-to's are quite obvious.
As the saying goes: A picture tells more than a thousand words, and this applies even more to video.
As a viewer, I don't want to only see a bunch of links or short news items, I will be drawn in when there is a movie option. I'll probably even click it, and watch the video. This means I stay on your page longer, and have a more positive feeling about that page.
That's important now, but in about a week, it will become even more important, with the introduction of Mahalo 3.0!. with M3.0, all viewers will get the opportunity to rate your page, and the more entertaining it is, the higher the ratings will be.
So, use that 'featured' section, add a nice headline and accompanying text (that's also important to search engines!), and maybe add a comment beneath it, inviting others to comment too.
People LOVE to be entertained, but also to be interactive!

On a recent page I put together (shameless plug here: http://www.mahalo.com/how-to-ace-multiple-choice-tests ), I actually featured 3 videos, because each of them was highly relevant to the topic and helped illustrate the points I made in my text.
However, as a page manager, I'd like to see more control given to page managers as far as page formatting, so we can control how many images and/or videos show up, and which ones.

Video game pages need lots of videos, cause gamers think visually.
News updates pages should have news and blogs at the top, because those readers are focused on words.
In all cases though, don't forget to put some Google ads above the bottom of the first screen of your page. You can have the best, most entertaining page on the Internet and not make any money from it, if no one sees your Google ads.

Is it important to put video and image links on Mahalo pages?
As page viewers, do you particularly want to see them? I love all the options we have as page managers, but I'm someone who believes less is more. I'd rather have a few quality links that won't get lost in the shuffle, so I'd like to know which features readers use most. (and thanks in advance for your advice).

No, I agree more with you. Same goes with answering questions, people will fill the whole page with photos and images that really make it more difficult to see the true point. Limit yourself to one video and one photo. It makes pages look junky and hard to sift through. I love a good video but don't include a mediocore video just because you feel you're supposed to. Keep it clean...the internet is already such a mess, the goal is for someone to be able to quickly ge tthe information they were looking for....not to get stuck on yet another page searching for the answer they wanted. People's internet page attention span is something like 3 seconds....seriously...if people can't intuitively scan the page and find the information they want...they will click somewhere else.

While I understand @jillbeth and @tboz, I have to agree with @mithrandir on this one. Videos and images make an otherwise drab page much more attractive. If a visitor doesn't care to, s/he doesn't have to click the video/image links. On a recent page I put together (shameless plug here: http://www.mahalo.com/how-to-ace-multiple-choice-tests ), I actually featured 3 videos, because each of them was highly relevant to the topic and helped illustrate the points I made in my text.

I guess that's my complaint-- I know attractive images that catch the viewer's eye convince them to stick around longer, but I'd also like more control over the formatting. Maybe as the site grows that will become an option.

I think it depends what kind of page it is. Video game pages need lots of videos, cause gamers think visually.
