Woot! Sign me up! I've been on the fence about applying for "How To" pages, but now I have to no excuse not to learn and give it a try!
I'm only holding out now waiting for a Rush topic that is right for me. I really don't know much about flavored butter or trimming eyebrows. Hopefully more will be added soon?
So when does Rush Week Officially end, anyway?
Thanks so much for this type of promotion, I love big group activities like this, and I'll be sure to post a link to my "How To" page as a comment to this answer once I'm done.
Just one more question: What is my rush name? Pinto? Flounder?

I had a few thoughts on topics I might want to write. However I don't think I want to spend the time to write one about "How to Grow Basil" etc just to prove that I can write.
Because, y'know... not all that interested in basil. :)

So, off I go to do some research...I was able to find a task from your list on a topic where I do have some interest and knowledge. Thanks.

How about a How to for let's say 'How to delete pictures on digg' I searched for that how to and NOTHING came up! also how about 'How to tie a tie' you will be amazed at how many people don't know that.
One last suggestion how about a "How to get rid of a library fine' I know the perfect way AND Google shows nothing about it! If you add these topics make sure I get one! Specially the library one!

Can you post when they are all in so we know? that way anyone who is still waiting can either just suggest one or take one you have in the system.
as always, thanks. these contests are so great!

HOW TO RUSH WEEK begins today!
Mahalo How To pages are the best resources on the Web for how to complete a specific task or project. The topics range from How to Grill Fish and How to Play Guitar, to How to Get Into Law School and How to Become a Forensic Scientist. Because we have become such a trusted destination for this vertical, Mahalo How To pages are some of the most profitable pages on the site as well.
Right now, if you want to build a How To page on Mahalo, we ask that you go through Tasks...and the only way to get a How To Task is to be a member of the How To team. We want to give everyone the chance to start building and claiming their How To pages, which is why we're very pleased to introduce the first-ever How To Rush Week!
Here's the idea:
Everyone who wants to join the How To Team should claim 1 How To Task that's labeled "Rush Week!" Please only claim 1 How To task, and please only claim a task if you're NOT currently a member of the How To team.
Everyone will have 3 days from when they claim their topic to build a How To page. If your task is accepted, you will receive 7 Mahalo Dollars and 10 points.
If we think your completed How To meets our level of Mahalo quality and thoroughness, we will then invite you to join the How To team and start taking on more How To tasks at your own pace.
As well, we will have prizes! The 4 pages we judge to be the overall best in terms of quality will receive an extra M$25 award.
So how do you build a How To task?
There's a few basic steps:
(1) In the top box, fill out the Guide Note as usual. Include general information about the topic of your page, and give our readers an indicate of what kinds of material you'll be discussing on the page.
(2) Research your topic thoroughly and outline a step-by-step process that will allow people to complete the task at hand. For example, if your topic is How to Can Tomatoes, spend a while doing your research and making sure you understand, step-by-step, how to undergo this process.
(3) Write the How To in as organized a fashion as possible. Be sure to include an Introduction (which should include a list of the materials people will need before getting started) and then easy-to-follow steps, each in its own section of the page. Start with step 1 and taking readers all the way through the process of completing the job. (Click "add another step" when you run out of boxes). Don't assume people will just know where to begin or be familiar with the topic more generally - write with a beginner in mind. Think about whether or not a reader could print out your page and use it as a guide while actually doing the task.
(4) Include a few "related mahalo pages" that link up somehow with your task. They don't need ot be other How To pages, or even pages that already exist on Mahalo. Just think about what 4 or 5 topics would also interest people reading your page.
(5) Include some general "tips" for someone who is starting on this project. Is there any particular insight you can provide them that will help them with this task? Is there any key things they should remember as they work through the process? Is there a certain website they should look at before embarking on the job? This is where to let people know about it. (If you have more than 1 tip, use the "Add new item" button to add more boxes).
And that's just about it.
Good luck, everyone!

OK, fair enough. Send me a suggestion for a topic you'd like to write a How To on (and make sure it's something we don't already have in the system), and I'll consider entering it for you and letting you submit it as a Rush Week entry. Sound good?

Really?
There look to be a bunch of interesting "How To" tasks. Heck while maybe a little bit dry, even "How to grow basil" could be interesting.
Growing basil is pretty easy after all. You buy seeds, plant them, water them and wait. I'd likely visit a few gardening sites to reference the best ways to grow plants like basil and since basil is in season locally, I might even get crazy and take a video camera down to my local farmers market to ask Linda a couple of questions about her 10 different varieties of basil.
Still, that's quite accommodating of Lon accepting a topic page that you find interesting!

I belive I´m already part of the How To team, right Lon? but since i´m still waiting for your answer, I guess this too will be an area where my eagerness and my knowledge in certain fields will have to wait until the next biblical drought, right?
So sad one willing to participate, are not receiving a decent feedback to start things up... oh, well... guess I will stick with answers... agaaiiiin.

Great idea @Lon, though I understand @phillipy and his reluctance to jump on the topic of growing basil, this is a way for both you and members to accomplish a common goal. So, off I go to do some research...I was able to find a task from your list on a topic where I do have some interest and knowledge. Thanks.

I'm sure many people are interested in growing things, and good luck to them.
A "How To" topic needs a bit too much work to be worth it for something that I neither know about or have any desire to learn for my own benefit.

Any task labeled "RUSH WEEK" should be available for anyone. If you are seeing that message, you are probably trying to claim a general "How To" page that is not part of the Rush Week contest. If not, let me know which thread you are trying to work on, as it may indicate some kind of error.

Thanks for giving us this chance. I have always wanted to be in the Mahalo How To team but never knew how to get in. I will try my best! I have written other How To's for places like Associated content, but I'm not too rusty. Last time I wrote one was a year ago!

I looked and saw the 'how to make dog treats', but thought it was too vague.
From the way I see it... anything in the garbage can is a treat to a dog!
@bunnyphuphu, for you rush name, you shall hereby be known as....carrots.
Oh well - I have grown herbs in containers before, and thyme is a culinary herb and I like to cook, it just took me way more research to do than it would for something that's more a specialty for me.
I have a "How to Clean..." page and already packed every tip in the "how to" part. ;)
Much bigger concern: Can I get in to spiff up my "How To" page after it's been submitted and approved? Wanted to fix some formatting errors and add some images. Any ideas?
Well, in any event, submitted for Mahalo's approval is my entry for Rush Week: How to Clean Hardwood Floors
