The subsidizing of tips (now $1M!) is, at the moment, just TEMPORARY. They are going to see if it increases the quantity of high quality answers and hopefully traffic to the site. It's also a great way to "jump start" the Mahalo economy, as people who have M dollars will ask tipped questions of their own.

If it does this, and adsense revenue goes up, then they may consider having some variation of this as a permanent thing. Personally, I'm unsure of what they should do, but I'm leaning towards removing the Mahalo subsidized tip after a month.

Not everyone who earns Mahalo Dollars on here collects. There are those who do not make it past M$40, which is the minimum on here. Likewise, there are people who do not care to cash out, and recycle the virtual currency back into the site. So, Mahalo can make revenue off Google AdSense. It could be like 20 cents per click or something, but it adds up as more users saturate the site.

the more tips that are available the more people will join as a member, the more members the more clicks, the more clicks the more ad revenue. It is an investment for Mahalo to add tips to make sure every question has a tip, it means bigger number, more traffic and in the internet world traffic means money!

Mahalo earns from those Google Ads primarily. As, it will gain users, It'll get more Ads from websites of countries from where most visitors are attracted to it. And since, Paypal's investor have hands in here, Most likely Mahalo will be getting on top in countries with Paypal and will be getting more Ads very soon just like many other online communities.
