It counts as a job to the extent that the money you earn is earned income that you need to report on your tax return. If you earn $600, Mahalo is required to send you the same 1099 that they issue for the remote freelancers that they pay hourly to edit pages and manage the site.
However, you have no set hours, no tasks that you are required to perform on a regular basis, and no employee-employer relationship. You are free to answer questions and perform similar work for pay for any other sites on the internet. If you want to call yourself a freelance Internet researcher, and mention that one of the sites that you contribute to is Mahalo Answers, that would be accurate. But you don't have a "job" at Mahalo - you're self-employed and one of the ways who earn money is by answering questions on Mahalo Answers.

I am a new user here, and I have already put in over 5 hours to manage 2 pages, answer and ask questions and I have a balance of M$2, which turns out is $1.50 American dollars. If this was a job, my hourly rate would a little over $0.25/hour! If I was to try to think of this a a job, and making a living off of I would be very depressed! If you really think about it, from a financial point of view, User Generated Content sites like these are a pyramid scheme... you make more money if you bring in more users, and page views, and spam your twitter with what is essentially free advertising.
Yes, you can make income which in turn needs to be reported on your taxes, but the definition of a job is not whether you make income or not... You can make income from saving account and clearly that is not, strictly speaking, a job.
The way to think of Mahalo, and many of these User Generated Content social networking sites is to think of them as a community that you want to be part of it. I hope that I can be helpful to users here and in turn I hope to get value to the questions I ask.

It's basically AdSense, but you give half of the money to Mahalo in exchange for building pages on their site and using their tools/advantages (eg. Mahalo pages rank well on Google). Lots of people make full time income from Google ads.

Does Mahalo count as a job?
I was thinking about this. Does answering questions on Mahalo to earn money count as a job or is just something that is more of a hobby. Is it something that could go on a resume? Ex. Internet Researcher for Mahalo.com. Would the amount of time spent working on the site have any influence on it? What do you think?

@snawitz It's very difficult to earn over $600, but if you request more than 1 payment at the $40 level, you still have to fill out the tax form.

Although you need to give Mahalo your information for tax purposes the second time you cash out, you won't receive a 1099 unless you've earned over $600. That said, any money earned, even the first $40, is taxable income that you are legally required to report on your tax return.

It is not a job, if this was a job then you would go postal! Mahalo is a job for Jason Calacanis and staff, and in addition from making a salary they are also the most paid 'members' on the site. I believe that with the economy crisis the way they are that people are looking more and more online to supplement their incomes. I do not see that Mahalo, http://www.mahalo.com/answers/answer/does-mahalo-count-as-a-job could be refered to as "Job, because the earnings are near enough to support a family on. I do see however, that it is a very good source for supplemental income to help provide for gas, lunch and perphaps pay a small bill with.

It used to be considered a job in the beginning, because we all filed W-9's , therefore the government considered it a job... and they charged us taxes on our earnings. I haven't heard about having to have W-9's on file with Mahalo since the new Mahalo has emerged. Would be nice to know

Yes we will have to file a W-9 form before receiving a 2nd payment from Mahalo. Here's a page that has the current details on Mahalo payments: http://www.mahalo.com/how-mahalo-payments-work

I don't know if a "job" is the right word, but I'm definitely here to make money and so far it's going well. I'm not sure you can make that much money answering questions, but the page management has HUGE potential. Don't forget that, in its current form, it's only been going for a month. If you manage hundreds of pages that average $20/month each, it really starts to add up. It's basically AdSense, but you give half of the money to Mahalo in exchange for building pages on their site and using their tools/advantages (eg. Mahalo pages rank well on Google). Lots of people make full time income from Google ads.
