Mahalo is adding a tip to all questions that don't offer a tip.

Do you think there should be a separate category on Mahalo for "chatty" questions?

Don't get me wrong, I love questions that encourage chat and socializing. They are an important part of Mahalo and garner considerable interest in the community. Sometimes though it's hard to find the questions that need an answer amongst the questions that I just enjoy answering. (I' m using these questions as an example because I posted answers to them.)

So, do you think having a separate category is a good idea? Why or why not?

According to Mahalo staff during previous Mahalo Tutorials the next Mahalo Answers update will hope to solve some filtering issues with the Mahalo front page.

Personally, I think clicking on the categories in the right hand sidebar are a real easy way to get to the questions you want to answer.

Okay, off to read the tutorials before I ask any more questions like this. LOL

Thanks Jeff, the filtering issues are what I was talking about. Guess I'm just too anxious to get involved. I need to slow down and learn the ropes first.

Putting the horse before the cart usually doesn't work in the long run. ;-)

heh, no worries, you can ask whatever you wish and we'll answer it, I don't think you'd be able to find this info anyway without watching 50hrs of Tutorial material.

I just know because I was there :) You can join us Mahaloians for Live Tutorials every Wednesday at Noon pst.

I did join for the one right before Halloween but it was way over my head at that point. ;- )

Yes, not Q and A but a place to discuss Q and A :) I hate to comment on people's threads. Wikia has a forum for each page, if I remember correctly. I think that's pretty cool.

I have been thinking about the Forum thing for a while. How cool would it be to have Forum Managers work like page managers and earn credit through the site. . . This would rock!

I am not sure how one would classify a chatty vs non-chatty question, but I have suggested more social options in the past.

Examples

1) A chat room
2) A Forum
3) Private message system

I think this would capture the chatty need quite nicely.

I was thinking about "chatty" questions as ones that would encourage people to debate and/or relate personal experiences as opposed to questions where people need information.

But I like your examples! ;-)

When I'm asking questions I tend to split them.

Questions where I want a hard and fast answer to like http://www.mahalo.com/answers/history/when-was-the-last-battle-fought-that-included-archers go on Mahalo.

Questions where I'm after an opinion (and I like chatty opinions) like this one
http://www.whatsyourconundrum.com/general/would-we-all-be-happier-if-we-didnt-watch-the-news-or-read-is-no-news-good-news tend to go on Conundrum.

I think it works nicely as a means of dividing the two. Although all questions about Mahalo (even if they are opinions) should probably be on Mahalo though.
