BIG NEWS: Mahalo Answers moves to M$2 automatic tip (trial for 10 days)!

You may have noticed that Mahalo is putting a M$2 tip on every untipped question. This is a test to see if we can get to 500 questions a day and 1,000+ amazing answers.

Some ground rules:

1. We reserve the right to remove tips from any question we think doesn't warrant two bucks at any time (including after an answer has been given). I think you understand that if a question is too easy it's not fair to put the M$2 on it.

2. This is only a test. We want to see if you guys go even more crazy giving good answers. If it goes well we are going to consider keeping it going (hint! hint! go kick butt!!!).

3. We've now paid out about 50 people and thousands of dollars. You can make a little extra cash using Mahalo Answers. Spread the word and help grow the site. If the site keeps growing we're gonna keep being able to do make this into a fun and profitable hobby!!!

4. I know money is not your motivation, but if you guys can make $25 to $100 each a month for a year, well, that's like $300 to $1,200 and that will buy you a Wii, new laptop (or three Netbooks) or maybe even a quick trip to Las Vegas! I think that is really kind of cool!

5. Obviously don't vote for yourselves or doing anything that is unethical. As everyone knows we'll find out at some point and you'll risk having your account closed if you cheat!!!! Don't cut corners PLEASE. We're here to help people and to give kick-ass answers! Let's stay focused on the goal everyone: helping users find information and answers they can trust.

6. Please post your favorite party song, video and/or photo below!!!!

Best Answer  Decided by Votes

This may increase the answers, but for the few that seem more interested in the money ( it is noticeable in a few unamed folks) it won't increase diverse questions.

Since the desired result is more questions with answers, shouldn't it be a split between the best answer (perhaps keep it at the dollar to ensure quality answers), 50 cents for questioner if no one votes it interesting and a dollar if at least one person votes it interesting?

I think that would increase "the vote patrol" as well. I've run through answered questions that no one voted interesting and I wish I had seen as they came up.

The system is intriguing and I love it here, but I would like to see people vote more and I think we should encourage questioners the same as we do those who answer.

As for voting for myself, I usually vote other answers as helpful which seems to be be voting against myself a little.

It's worth a try.

Agreed, but voting is painful.

Navigating through the list and multiple page views per question. If the "Next Question" button took you to the next undecided question I'd vote a lot more.

Also, it would be nice to be able to answer questions in this bucket. Sometimes there is no best answer or the "best answer" is just wrong.

Hmmm, I just went and looked a some of my old answers and found this one that I spent some time on and it went no where:

http://www.mahalo.com/answers/technology-and-internet/what-tech-skills-to-acquire-for-a-budding-net-entrepreneur-with-a-business-background

Kind of disheartening. I think we need a voting requirement for belts (X points are required to be from voting).

@ensorceled I've been saying that Next question thing for the longest time. If only it worked when you rank oldest first, I think we'd get more voting.

I've already noticed a surge in new questions today and it's mainly from twitter users which is awesome.

My only question is... Where's the fund to buy Jason a beer?

Give really great, original answers and we'll be able to keep it going! The bottom line is that if you guys give really solid answers we will get ranked in Google and Yahoo's search engines.

great search rankings happen for two reasons:

1. The page has great original content on it.
2. Folks link to a page (and folks link to pages more when they are high quality).

So, we're basically making a bet here that if we invest another $15,000 Mahalo Dollars a month you guys will give MUCH better answers (and more of them!). Those great answers will cause the pages to help people more and thus get ranked better. If they get ranked and get some traffic they will make some money from Google AdSense. So, this is an investment for us and you guys pay us back by pouring your heart and souls into those amazing answers (which you already do even on the free questions!!!!).

best j

@jasoncalacanis It makes a lot of sense! And may I add that it creates a positive feedback cycle in the sense that it pumps more money into the system that people will use to give tips, therefore increasing quality further.

How many questions a day has the M$1 tip produced? Has it met your expectations or went beyond your expectations?

It created a slightly noticeable increase in activity and answers.... like 10-25%. Hard to tell exactly since the service was so new when we did it and because twitter integration started at the same.

The truth is folks are not here for the money. However, we do find that folks are intrigued by Mahalo Dollars and check us out for that reason. They stay because it's fun and a cool community.... like a secret little pocket of good people in bright sunny corner of the internet.

The kindness of the community is really what motivates people in my experience.

Mahalo has all the qualities to be the leading QnA and competing with Yahoo Answers but the thing Mahalo lacks is most of the people don't know about Mahalo (that pays for their answers). Most of the people who join Mahalo come from forums, Jason's personal efforts or reference from existing Mahalo members. Now with the introduction of $2 tip more and more people will be joining Mahalo, but the important thing i feel is Mahalo needs to reach people by some good advertising and targeting Yahoo answers members. I am already finding Mahalo answers in Google SERP's. Definitely it is going to increase with time.

Very interesting Jason!

Of course, I love Mahalo Answers - especially designing some concepts. But this was something I didn't expect to see...

In fact, I thought that Mahalo Answers was going to return to $0.25 tips or no tips at all...after all, there was a lot of discussion in March about the $1 ending at the end of the month. And now, Mahalo Answers in April is going to $2.

Could this mean that there will be $50 in years to come? Lol.

I like the idea...I am hoping to purchase Adobe Photoshop with all my tips from Mahalo Answers. Not only do I like designing for my personal use but also for Mahalo - so with $2 tips for every question, I should see my design software very soon...!

Thanks!

Very interesting, however, won't doing this discourage people from putting their own tips on questions. If someone only thinks their question is worth $1 or only has $1, it is actually worth less than questions where the asker placed nothing on the question.

Agreed. If I want a question answered, I fund it myself instead of having MA fund it for me - at least in my mind, it shows that I value the community enough that I'm willing to pay for the answer(s) I seek.

That's a good point. But I don't think it'll affect that much because people still tend to answer questions that they see at the top of the page.

Why not have a reward question for the best question once a week? The best question earns 100 dollars?
