I am an active participant in Yahoo! Answers, with a 61 percent Best Answer rate. So I imagine (with all due modesty) that I am the sort of user on Yahoo! Answers that you'd be looking to recruit.
I think it's about more than just money. Indeed, paying people to answer could lower the quality of answers overall, since they have a greater incentive to push out more in less time.
I would focus on building traffic as a start. One reason Yahoo! Answers is relatively successful is simply because it has a vast number of eyeballs on its pages. The next step is to examine your work flow systematically and conduct UX analyses up the wazoo. Any hiccups in UX will diminish activity and hinder growth. As a third piece of the puzzle, focus on the community. I think this is where you are strongest already, so it is a matter of getting the feedback and pushing that info back into your offerings.

Steve Rubel, blogger wrote about the "transient web" some time ago. This is something that is very true, and I believe in it, that the web is transient. Steve Rubel would be a good guy to contact as well. I posted a link to his Transient Web http://www.micropersuasion.com/2006/04/the_transient_w.html

As you get more and more questions asked on your site, more and more of Mahalo answers will be indexed and more and more people will discover you great social community and what it has to offer.... I guess my only suggestion would be to make it clear on every pages that you are the best out there. Right now, if it was my first time, and I landed on a Mahalo question, I would have no clue about receiving tips for my answers...
You not only offers tips but you're also better I think in quality & design compare to Yahoo answers.
I really like the fact you can't vote or give a thumbs up for yourself for your answer. This is a major flaw with Yahoo Answer.
Peace.

Best way for us to recruit top Google Answers, ChaCha guides & Y! Answers researchers for Mahalo Answers?
Google Answers is defunct, but many freelance at uclue.com. Is there a group for these folks anywhere?
Should we try and tap into the ChaCha Guide pool?
What about Yahoo Answers?
Is anyone here active in those communities? Is the word spreading in them?

Honestly, I don't think that a couple of dollars here and there are enough to incentivize people. It might be a good idea to have ... Category Experts -- I think that really motivates people to share their specific category of expertise - and maybe provide a $100 reward for the top 3 experts in each category.

We will have experts at some point next year that we will promote. Right now we have to establish who exactly is an expert and what makes them one (points, best answers, helpful answer, etc).
I think direct questions will really be the big win for folks. When people with established brands come into the system (say an expert on wine), we could promote them and say "ask Gary Vaynerchuck any wine question directly for five bucks!"
He would then NOT have to compete with other users and could answer on his own schedule.
The reward for being an expert would be direct questions in that model. However, we need a LOT more users asking questions to make that happen.

Yes, definitely! Get them all! This may be a little risky, but maybe post questions on Y! Answers about Mahalo Answers, like have you tried it etc. Also, some of the better Google Answers guides has a blog called Blogoscoped, which you should check out http://blogoscoped.com and maybe he has some way of working with you. Another risky move, but tyring calling ChaCha 800-2ChaCha and asking questions about Mahalo Answers, like "How can we get Cha Cha guides to answer questions on Mahalo Answers?" Of course you could be a little more creative! Steve Rubel, blogger wrote about the "transient web" some time ago. This is something that is very true, and I believe in it, that the web is transient. Google answers as you know is not allowing to post new answers its almost closed but the real challenge is with yahoo answers. I am a regular yahoo answerer since its existence from bout 2004 0r 2005. The positive and beneficial part of mahalo answers it gives $$$ which is going to encourage more and more people to dive in. Yahoo which is already going through very tough business phase in search engine business has lost its edge in yahoo answers they haven't made any further development in their community since its existence. I found Mahalo from my google feed reader and i think Mahalo has already knocked the doors of Yahoo

Cash incentives for success on the site would help as well. Answering a certain # of questions or reaching a certain belt. I also think that if mahalo answers was able to be used within other services (twitter, friendfeed, etc) more people would answer questions and more people would be aware of questions
