A question/suggestion for Mahalo. Staffers is it possible to give a tiny amount for votes? Everyone: would you vote more often for a tip?

I was thinking $0.05 or something. I think it would drive up voting quite a bit even if it was just a token amount.

Voting, now there is an issue I have not reflected on for a while. Thanks for your question, it brought the subject up for me/all of us to ponder.

Although I consider it a choir, I vote four to five days a week. It is one of my least favorite activities. Rarely does one see a negative thread while answering questions. People are generally polite even when giving constructive criticism. This is when I am proud to be a Mahaloian. Now when it comes to voting, that is quite a different story. Reading all those replies, "I selected No Best Answer because"... Sometimes it is the only answer and even though it was not done exactly as someone else would have liked, it is an answer. At least the person took the time to answer the question. Being critical or judgmental after the fact seems inappropriate to me. I was taught, criticize in private, praise in public (Maybe replies like this could be made private?). Sorry, I digress...

Judging to me is work. I feel like I am doing someone else's job. They took the time to ask the question, I wish they would take the time to pick best answer or no best answer. I vote because I feel it is a responsibility. I also like reading the answers given to questions that didn't interest me enough to check out while they were active. I also search for answers to nominate for the Answer of the Day Contest. And then there is the points, they do add a little incentive.

There is so much to do on Mahalo that is interesting, fun, positive and earns $M. I am considering giving up voting and devoting my time to those activities. Looking at the pros and cons, the cons are slightly ahead. The $M0.05 per vote would tip the balance in the other direction.

In conclusion: I may vote more if there was a tip. As a matter of fact, it may be the only thing that keeps me voting at all. I hate work without pay!

I was wondering that, too, cg. I figured there must be some good reason that you could add $0.05 to a question but $1 is the smallest to tip the answerer - if there is, I'd love to hear it. If there isn't, maybe this Q/suggestion will help change it.

Ahhhhhhh, I can see clearly now. Sorry I misunderstood the question. You're talking about increasing voter participation in choosing best answers when the question-asker didn't choose in the 3-4 day period. Yeah, that would be a good idea, tho I guess it depends on how much value there really is - for Mahalo - in having a "best answer" or THE best "best answer" on some (or all) questions.

cg, is the problem - as you perceive it - that noone is voting on some questions, or is it that a tiny amount of votes results in poor choices, or...?

As for my "question" about why we have a $1 minimum to tip the answerer, would someone like to take a stab at explaining that (or should I ask it as a separate question)?

I still vote, because it gives me belt points, but in reality, the belts are more badges of honor than anything - they don't DO all that much for you in the end.

Even a penny a vote would probably get me voting MORE than I already do.
