Magical disappearing pages from google searches, why does it happen?
Why does this happen? I've heard of de-indexing but if I can still find the url in google it's not de-indexed...really..is it?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

M$This question intrigued me.
I did a check.
When I use Google search : “How To Grow An Indoor Herb Garden”, your webpage is nowhere to be seen.
When I use Google search: “How To Grow An Indoor Herb Garden Mahalo”, it appears. The webpage should be indexed.
This is one of the applications to check Google PageRank.

I key in your webpage and your webpage got is N/A.
Excerpt of explanation:
Quote:
“N/A (not available) - it is not possible to show any pagerank now.
The N/A pagerank (grey pagerank bar) might be due to one of the following reasons:
(1) the web page is new, and it is not indexed by Google yet,
(2) the web page is indexed by Google, but it is not ranked yet,
(3) the web page was indexed by Google long ago, but it is recognised
as a supplemental (Supplemental Results) page,
(4) the web page or the whole website is banned by Google.”

I guess #1, #2 are not likely for your case, since it’s done before. #4 are not likely too since it’s OK when I search the title + Mahalo.
Maybe you should ask your VM or Mahalo’s SEO expert to investigate for you.
This is worrying. I saw ehow, articlebase, associatedcontent’s similar articles are all in front.
Some insights form this SEO website:

Excerpt: (refer to the website for details)
"How does a page go supplemental?
From my experiences pages have typically went supplemental when they became isolated doorway type pages (lost their inbound link popularity) or if they are deemed to be duplicate content. For example, if Google indexes the www. version of your site and the non www. version of your site then likely most of one of those will be in supplemental results.
If you put a ton of DMOZ content and Wikipedia content on your site that sort of stuff may go supplemental as well. If too much of your site is considered to be useless or duplicate junk then Google may start trusting other portions of your site less."
"How to get out of Google Supplemental results?
If you were recently thrown into them the problem may be Google. You may just want to give it a wait, but also check to make sure you are not making errors like www vs non www, content manangement errors delivering the same content at multiple URLs (doing things like rotating product URLs), or too much duplicate content for other reasons (you may also want to check that nobody outside your domain is showing up in Google when you search for site:mysite.com and you can also look for duplicate content with Copyscape).
If you have pages that have been orphaned or if your site's authority has went down Google may not be crawling as deep through your site. If you have a section that needs more link popularity to get indexed don't be afraid to point link popularity at that section instead of trying to point more at the home page. If you add thousands and thousands of pages you may need more link popularity to get it all indexed.
After you solve the problem it still may take a while for many of the supplementals to go away. As long as the number of supplementals is not growing, your content is unique, and Google is ranking your site well across a broad set of keywords then supplementals are probably nothing big to worry about."

M$A mahalo question will also out rank a page in google usually. I recall smartweb our resident SEO expert starting a thread about it but I can't seem to find it now.
Now that last bit.. would blame the problem on Mahalo's quickly increasing size. THAT is possible.. and your right makes you wonder how many Mahalo pages are going to "google hell"
I'm tipping you the same tip for best answer since you put so much effort into trying to find the answer as well. :) Thanks
I am curious how’s your other pages doing.
I just pick the 1st one to try: Unemployment for Maternity Leave
Good news is that it is on 1st page.
Bad news are that it is behind Yahoo Answers, Wiki Answers and BlurtIt.
Q&As beat a page.
I’m not an expert in SEO but I think Mahalo has to do some investigations.
Thanks.. Appreciated your tips.
Actually I join in the discussion as I find it interesting and insightful :-)
The knowledge learned will be useful for my blogs too.
Though that answer is awesome.. I'm not sure why the pages would be thrown there.. they are new pages with over 1000 words of original content and multiple back links...before vanishing most of the were front to first three pages in rank.
That just wouldn't make sense...not that google often does
You owe me big time kiddo. And some day I will collect :-)

is one of them. Originally it was page 2.. I check today i can't find it at all going through all the pages.
They are probably for very popular search terms which makes them very competitive. How many inlinks from outside sites do they have? That has a significant effect on their page rank. Lets try an experiment. Check out this question http://www.mahalo.com/answers/mahalo2/can-you-help-me-with-an-experiment-with-google-page-rank-tweet-or-blog-this-link-http-www-mahalo-com-how-to-grow-an-indoor-herb-garden please vote it up so we can see if it works.
I wanted to say that your experiment worked! The page is now front page searching the title in quotes and 2nd page without quotes. :) Very cool. Thanks.
I'll answer in this comment because my question is too old to edit. It appears that your page may have been sent to Google hell, or what used to be called the supplemental index. These are pages Google considers to be less important than other results and are only served up when there isn't anything in the main index to satisfy a query. Google used to label results in the supplemental index but doesn't anymore. This is all conjecture on my part because Google is very close mouthed about what they do. For example I searched for "A small Fan will help keep the plants cool and imitate wind" which returned no results on Google until I added site:mahalo.com This suggests that Google has your content indexed but in not providing it in the primary results. It would be interesting to see if this has been experienced by any other page managers.
A quote from http://www.webuildpages.com/jim/google-supplemental-results/
"Now just to recap some major reasons why pages might be in the new Secret Supplemental Results:
Duplicate Content, too little content, or orphaned pages, as well as having no outside sites linking to pages, and poor internal linking (only a few internal links to that page), are the major reasons Google tosses these pages to Google Hell."
