Madison Bumgarner was the favorite to make the San Francisco Giants roster as the fifth starter but ended up at Triple - A Fresno to start t

he season. At Fresno he struggled early on with his fastball velocity and mechanical issues. He is only 20 years old and still has great potential. Could the Giants be rushing him? Maybe if he's struggling yet at Triple - A he can pitch at double A. No harm in him succeeding there first to get some confidence. How quickly do you think he'll make it back to the Giants and stay there? The sky is the limit with his ability.

Madison Bumgarner will turn 21 in August of this year. He has pitched a total of just over 2 years in the Minors, and in those two years he has never posted an ERA above 2.00. Last year he was called up in September where he pitched 10 innings and once again posted an ERA under 2.00.

Word on the street is, Bumgarner didn't do the things necessary over the Winter leading up to Spring Training to prepare for his big league tryout. He stuggled in spring, and was sent back down to the Fresno Grizzlies of AAA. His first two starts there were terrible too, but his last three starts have been excellent. In those 3 combined starts he has allowed 3 earned runs, struck out 10, and held batters to an average of under .200. With the not so hot start of Giants 5th starter Todd Wellemeyer (1-3, 5.55 ERA, 1.479 WHIP), we may see Bumgarner starting at AT&T Park before the All-Star Break.

As to whether the Giants are rushing him or not, I don't think so. I think his slow start shouldn't be taken too seriously, as we've seen some of the best pitchers in the game get off to slow starts time and time again. While it is possible to rush some young gunners, Bumgarner has shown from the very beginning that he's a special talent. 21 years old is plenty old to be successful in the big leagues.
