So is it safe to say that after Apple pulls out of Macworld it's only a few years till Macworld as a whole will cease to exist?

It may be as little as one or two years, as in the case of the Boston MacWorld expo. However, Based on the annual timing of the event, there may be a replacement that springs up, or the Paris expo in September may even be moved closer to the New Year season in order to garner more attention apart from the WWDC convention in June.
