You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner are both great. Both can be tried free. Carbon Copy Cloner is donation ware, you can donate what you feel it is worth. Super Duper is free for full disk backups, the paid version adds features like incremental backups. Both can create a bootable external drive, Both are excellent. I use SuperDuper but would have no problem recommending either.

SuperDuper is very good. I have to agree with bdegrande, you will not get a better answer than this. SuperDuper will make the external HDD bootable so you can boot to it if your main drive goes out.
