Gather what info you can from family. Birth, marriage and death dates are good to start with. Next step would be taking that info and using the internet, church records, government census records, etc. to dig deeper. There are plenty of intenet sites, most involve some form of payment, sadly. If you are in North America, and you have access to a Mormon/Jesus Of Latter-Day Saints church, they have a family resource center that is most helpful (and free!), no matter what faith you family follows.
Happy hunting!
