This has happened to be twice, both with long-term relationships. It's not an easy thing to endure. Here's how I got through it.....

1. Remember the reason you are leaving them.
2. Don't be rude, but just explain your feelings calmly and concisely.
3. Try to remove yourself from the situation as quickly as possible.
4. Keep in mind that, staying in an unhappy relationship leads a lifetime of growing old, bitter, and miserable with that person and that you actually saving that person a great deal MORE heartache by exiting the relationship sooner rather than later. It only gets harder with each passing day, never easier.

Don't worry about the crying. Some people just can't help it. I cry when I get in to tricky situations too, but that doesn't mean I dont want the other person to take sympathy for me.. sometimes I just can't help it!

You might want to try to be empathetic with them... Stop the conversation and check in with them. See if they need some time to compose themselves so that you can have a meaningful conversation. Check in with yourself so that you keep yourself centered.

You might even want to preface the conversation around your concern that that the conversation might get too intense and agree that you can give yourself a "time out".
