Well, some of us believe that God created marriage, which we first find in the Book of Genesis (Adam and Eve). God also made it rather clear that He intended for marriage to be between one man and one woman. I believe both of these things, which is why I oppose gay marriage. The biggest problem here, in my opinion, is that the government is butting into marriage, and that shouldn't be the case. There should not be marriage licenses for ANY couple, regardless of sexual preference, because this is a matter of humans interfering with something that we didn't create. Marriage existed long before some government came up with the idea of regulating it and making people pay fees to obtain the paperwork, after all.
Besides: if the states stopped issuing marriage licenses, period, same-sex couples would no longer have to fight for their legal rights. No matter what gender your (general "your") partner is, you should have the same legal rights that I do. If your partner's in the hospital, you should be able to visit. You should be able to add each other to health-insurance policies, and you should have the same power of attorney that anybody else has. If nobody has the marriage license, then nobody will use that now-nonexistent piece of paper to justify denying people the right to do what they ought to be able to do if that's what they choose.

The problem really does come down to a word, marriage. Even those who do not believe marriage was created by God cannot argue that it was created thousands of years ago. In ancient times marriage joined a man and a women in order to create a family unit. What has happened now is that many special privileges have been tied to this union, some by government but many by private companies. Company polices such as insurance or hospital visitation could easily be changed to allow for same sex unions with out the need for any laws to be passed. Overhauling the federal tax code might be a little more difficult. I believe marriage is only between a man and women, but I don’t see any reason same sex couples or polyamorous families, for that matter, should be denied the same legal rights as married couples.
