For his birthday, I got him a really nice keychain with a theme he liked (we both love lizards and geckos). I got him a keychain with a stuffed lizard on it and the key to my house.

There were actually 2 separate proposals.

The first one came from her. We had spent the night together at her place and we woke up when the sun came up the next Saturday morning. We were just barely awake when she said "I want to marry you". It was so surreal and out of the blue. She said she had never been as comfortable with a man as she has been with me and it just felt right.

Little did she know I had been wanting to say the same thing for a couple of weeks, but by this time we had only been dating for a few months. I thought it was too soon, but I think she could tell I wanted to say it so she broke the ice.

Since that one was so informal and out of the blue, there was no engagement ring so that gave me a chance to really plan a nice surprise.

We met at a volunteer meeting for a convention I help run, so everybody at the meetings knew we were becoming an item. On the first anniversary of the day we met, we had another meeting at the same place. As the meeting wrapped up, I got up in front of everybody (30-40 people) and proposed to her. She was sitting in the middle of a row of other volunteers, so I had to crawl over a few chairs to get down on my knee in front of everybody, but it was worth it.

Of course she said yes. We eloped a few weeks later and we've been happily married ever since.
