How do you help a friend who is with a guy who verbally abuses her and does not respect her?

Any reasonable input is welcomed! Self esteem problems with some women, unfortunately. :) thanks!

You tell her to get out of the relationship. Verbal abuse can lead to physical abuse. In any case, it shows a tremendous disrespect when a man treats his girlfriend like that.

I'd bet dollars to donuts he has a bad relationship with his mother as well.

Have a talk with her in private, but face to face. Tell her why her boyfriend’s behavior is not acceptable. Be completely honest with her. Be prepared, because she might say thanks or she might hate you. However, you need to be honest and kind.

Really not much you can do until that person is ready to take the step to help herself.

yes, you are right. it is good to speak up, though. so we did. politely. I see far too many young women (and older ones too at this point) in this kind of relationship.

You can't. I'm very sorry to say this, and I have a lot of personal experience with it.

You can't help her. Talk all you like, but your words will hit a rock-hard wall of denial and excuses. And if you get too close to the truth, she'll turn on YOU, not him. And then she won't be any better off. You won't be better off. Both of you will just be minus a friend.

The best thing you can do is be there for her. Give her some hint that you don't approve, but mostly just be there to listen. Some day her world will crumble, when he gets bored and antsy, and she'll shatter into a million pieces. Just be ready at any time to help pick up those pieces - that's when she'll need you.

Us women who don't think we deserve any better can't be persuaded otherwise.
