My advice, would be to communicate. Call him and be honest. I think it takes a better person to realize that they have made a mistake. I would either tell him in person if possible or call him and tell him.

talk, communicate, explain, apologize, realize what you did wrong. try to rebuild trust. evaluate by yourself what you did, and vow to correct it, best you humanly can.

Kind of tough when we don't know what you did.

As the others mentioned - Communication is a big key.

Maybe explain what they mean to you and what life was like before they were with you, when they were with you, and what things are like now that they are gone.

If you would like to be a bit more open in what transpired you would probably get better, non-judgmental advice. Mull it over.
