Richard.
1. Based on their backstory to which drives their decisions on the island
Richard's backstory has not yet been revealed. However, he exists in every timeline and consistently is an important part of the island.
2. Good and Bad characteristics
Richard is both good and bad. I think that he acts solely in the best interests of the island and can not be considered good or bad. He seems to recruit important people to the island and always seems to be right beside the current "leader" of the others.
3. What do you see happening to that character in the future? (if they have not already died / or been completely written off the show)
Richard's character will play a very significant role in the conclusion of the show. I believe that as Richard's character is explained, the island itself will be explained. This is also the core of my reasoning behind him being the most important character in the Lost story.

He stands up for what he believes in, but he may have too much faith in the island.
I think he will continue to be one of the major characters in the story and take the leadership role of the people on the island.

I agree. Furthermore, I have a theory (who doesn't? :) ) ... Richard Alpert = Ra. And Horace Goodspeed = Horus. You did notice all those Egyptian heiroglyphs everywhere, didn't you?

I caught your Tweet about this theory, Mark. Since then, I've watched a couple of episodes and thought back to how the writers have placed the Egyptian references and the first appearance of Horus. I completely agree with you and will be surprised if you're not right.

I’ll have to say Sawyer. His very traumatic childhood leads him to a life of crime and a need for revenge. Events on the island gave him a new understanding of life and a loyalty to others that he had never felt before. When the chance arises to take the vengeance that he has been waiting for so long his new outlook makes it very difficult for him to kill the man he has been searching for a his life. He is now very loyal to his friends and to Dharma (while these loyalties put him at odds with him self at times). His poor attitude toward others has slowly turned a 180 and now he is not as arrogant and self absorbed as he was just after the plane crash. I am guessing that this new loyalty will somehow save the Lostie living with Dharma from the “Purge”.

I'm gonna go with John Locke on this one. He has a pretty good back story and he seems to be one of the most significant people on the island. He stands up for what he believes in, but he may have too much faith in the island.
I think he will continue to be one of the major characters in the story and take the leadership role of the people on the island.
