Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have been seriously dropping hints about time travel being an important part of the mystery of the island, including allusions to the island's disappearance at the end of the last season being due to time travel. As to the exact when, I think it could be anywhen, but the time period when the Black Rock first appeared on the island would be most interesting

The island is actually the 13th colony, and Dharma invented Cylons. Of course, they won't tell us about it for at least another season and a half.
