Looking for Smart Computer people.

Hi just finished building the BitTorrent Clients page. I'm looking for some feed back. The person who gives the most useful answer wins the tip. If the answer is really good I will add to the Mahalo tip. I will also give tips to other people who don't have the best answer, but provide useful info.

If I missed anything import let me know by replying below and/or posting it on the site in the "Comment Section". I will give you creditfor the info if you want.
Tip for best answer: M$2.15
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Just a couple of things.

The first paragraph, to me, would not make sense to your average person. A lot of people don't know what the hell a "protocol" is, or the difference between centralized and decentralized networks. Feel free to link to these articles as they're quite pertinent to your page, but also break it down for those that don't quite have the expertise you do - perhaps someone who has never downloaded anything ever is coming to your page to find out whether or not BitTorrent will be easy for them to use (yes, your page is specifically on BitTorrent clients, but they may just be following where Google takes them; keep in mind what keywords you have in your article and where people may be coming from). Explain what seeders are, what leechers are (I see you briefly touch on those on the side of your page, but not in the heart of it, where your main article is). Explain how the user's experience is different from Limewire and BitTorrent (not just on the server end, like in your article); like how with Limewire you just download someone's file, whereas with BitTorrent, you download a torrent file that connects you to a lot of people that give you bits of the file you want. You cover that briefly in your "how to" section, but I don't think a first-time user would really be getting anything out of it. I would maybe include screenshots of a popular torrent site and client, to walk them through how to download using BitTorrent.

"Unlike programs like KaZaA or Limewire, which for the most part only have pirated material, users of BitTorrent can use the program without getting into any legal trouble so long as they respect copyright law."

On the contrary, both programs have tons of pirated material at their disposal. You can still be caught with copyrighted material using either program. BitTorrent is just marketed as slightly less illegal because technically no one is downloading anyone's file - they're getting bits and pieces from different users. Just a small point, but it stood out in my mind. If you're interested in perhaps expanding on illegality with BitTorrent clients (maybe in your history section, which just seems to cover the BitTorrent company only), you can check out these links:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2009/apr/17/the-pirate-bay-trial-guilty-verdict
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8382012.stm

Also, "Transmission" is how the Linux client is spelled (not "Transmittion"), and there is also Deluge which is still in RC, but quite popular among open source users (http://dev.deluge-torrent.org/wiki/Download). You might also want to include the "mother" client, BitTorrent (http://www.bittorrent.com/btusers/download). You also include BitTornado in your "how to," but not in your list of clients, you may want to put a link up there.

Lastly, I'm not really sure why you're italicizing and capitalizing phrases like "file sharing" and "client server model." I understand the emphasis this provides, but it confuses me - a first-time reader of your article - by the first paragraph. I might go through and do a bit of a re-write on those parts.

I think that's about all I found. I hope I've helped!

Thanks I will do the following:
1) "The first paragraph, to me, would not make sense to your average person"
You are the 2nd person to say this and I agree. I will put in a Intro section explaining what a the page is and where to find what info. I will also add a quick explanation in easy to understand terms.

2) You mention I need to explain the terms better and not just in the sidebar but in the article. I will do this.

3) You said I should explain program differences from a user point of view and not the server end. I'm a server admin at work so I guess that came out in my writing. I will try to change that part.

4) The Mini how to seems to need some more work. The original intent of this section was to give at brief overview and then push them to the How to use BitTorrent page for more detail.

5) The pirate comment. I was trying to that there is a lot legal stuff on BitTorrent unlike the other programs. I think you are wright putting it in the history section may be best or just removing it all together.

6) I have corrected the spelling error

7) "italicizing and capitalizing". I think I will remove the italicizing and capitalizing and replace it with the textbook way of doing it. I will bold the work the first time it is used and then define it in the sentence.

You have been a great help thanks

I'm so glad I saw this question , this is right up my ally.

Your page is coming along great! I hope the following information helps you!

For starters there are 2 excellent torrent programs you should look at.

  • Halite
First a and foremost is Halite (No page for it is built YET) , it's one of the very few _lite_ _open source_ torrent programs.
    You can grab it here.
    http://www.binarynotions.com/halite-bittorrent-client
The last release was November 11 2009

Halite is the only torrent program I currently use for common downloads, anything else I use uTorrent. It has most of the features of uTorrent already in it, so I don't have to go to crazy worrying about bloat.

And since its open source, I can change the program to my hearts desire or add extensions/plugins to the original work.

  • uTorrent ( OLD VERSION!!!!!! )
Any version of uTorrent(No page for it is built YET either) made prior to 1.8 would have been coded from the original creator prior to it being sold to the massive company PeerFactor (Previously part of RetSpan) which probably has spy/adware incorporated in it.

There is a digg post on the matter and what PeerFactor did to the program.

    http://digg.com/security/UTorrent_Sold_out_You_will_get_caught_using_it

(So if I where you I would put a disclaimer somewhere on your page about programs tracking and saving user data as well.)

  • Network Speed Tweaks/Hacks
I would also recommend you look at my response to this question.
How many ways are there to speed up your web browser on a wireless connection ?

And while you are there take a look at OpenDNS.com (Per @RobBrown 's suggestion) as well,, -- or use Google's new public DNS 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4

These are all things that would help speed up torrent downloading.

    _

Other than that the page looks great!

    I hope this helps!

    Kind Regards,
    @XDSr

You have given me a lot of good info thanks. Thank you for tweeting my question. My favorite BitTorrent Client is Vuze (still building this page) which is the opposite of your Halite client.

I will add Halite to the list on BitTorrent Clients

I think that your page is very useful, considering that I am new to BitTorrent and never really bothered that much with it because of my lack of time to find out what and how to use it. Being a newbie, my view is that you should maybe make the introduction less "Techie" as I am afraid that other newbies won't bother reading the whole page after that. Contrary to that idea, I read it all the way expecting where will I get the hint of how it works... I finally found the info I wanted almost at the very end of the page, which is your mini - howto. If you can just find a hole in your first paragraph saying that "after you read this (5 minutes or less), you will be able to understand the basics of BitTorrent. For what its worth, thanks. I am on my way to put my new found knowledge in motion:)

Do you think that I should move the Fast Facts content to the sidebar and put a table of contents in It's place?

Thanks for the input. I will put a better introduction in the beginning. On the "Mini How to" I made it very short and at the bottom I but the link to a full Mahalo page on it. Where you able to find that?

Did you see the terms in the sidebar? Did anyone see them? If you did where they helpful or not.
    Thanks for your input.

Yeah, I saw the terms and they are good. I would not change it. Maybe if you break them between each line to make them slightly apart.

The fast facts are placed ok, but I will try to move the Mahalo related question some slots above.

You can also include routers with built-in BT engine like Asus RT-N13U 802.11b/g/n Router

    "Enhanced Download Master
    24/7 Non-Stop BT Download:
HTTP, FTP, BT (BitTorrent) download protocols can be download automatically from the internet. You can keep downloading even when PC is off."

The info is really good. I guess the router has Linux on it and has a BT on that.

I've never seen a router like that before, how exactly does the download process work ? , How are the files downloaded if the pc is turned off ?

hmm, I think I found a close match to a router I was planning to make one out of a PC. Check this one out - the next gen router - gigabit switch and N router, AIO print server, file server,...

    http://usa.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=WAa6AQFncrceRBEo&templete=2

I think I will stop with this comment about the routers, since this thread is about BT.

I was planning to buy this router for $25, but was sold out.

Anyway, the USB port can be used to connect a USB printer or external storage. Not sure if we can connect a USB hub to it so that we could use both the features.

World of Warcraft use Bittorent :

    http://arstechnica.com/news/posts/1079538547.html

GNU/Linux use Bittorent for distribution as it's cheaper to distribute :

If you're able to, I recommend these couple links:

    Self-explanatory.

I'm not sure if I totally understand the question your asking. Are you asking what computer company offers the best insight on computer problems, or are you asking what's the best company who offers the best torrents for downloading music and such? Or, is this question more in regards to distributing member's feedback on the page dedicated to torrent information on this very site? Once, my questions are answered, then I can submit a helpful and proper answer. Until, then, I'm stumped.

Hi, sorry if I was not clear. The page I made BitTorrent Clients is about BitTorrent and the programs called clients. What I'm asking is for some feed back on the content I put on the page. A review if you will. I would also like people to contribute some content as well. If there some people who think I left something out or miss spoke please let me known. I don't think of this page being finished I'm looking for help with the finishing touches.

I hope this clears thing up.
