Looking for information on quality of life rankings- new ways to look at it, data gathering techniques, indicator selection & new approaches

I'm researching the measurement of quality of life throughout the world and the criteria that are used. There are a number of indices published which are derived from government statistics and data drawn from primary research. The indicators are obviously subjective and are unavoidably bound to the editorial bias of the compiler. The Economist Intelligence Unit, for example, factors in "Church Attendance" as a positive indicator. When researching for a "good place to live", a 100% church attendance may or may not be a good thing to you. I'm interested in looking at alternative views on quality of life - different rankings and approaches. I'm interested in links and information on how different organizations collect, organize and analyze data and in particular I'm looking for new ways of approaching the topic.

Bhutan's "gross National Happiness" would be a good example of this. I'm also looking for info on Quality of Life indices which reveal differences at a more local level - say a region or city - rather than just a nation.

Essentially, a collection of salient links and any additional info would be most appreciated.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Unless you are already familiar with http://www.mercer.com/qualityofliving then you should definetaly have a look. It ranks the best cities in the world by quality of life by factors such as infrastructure, public transport, crime rate, employment etc.

European cities rank top, Vienna replacing Zurich in first place after the Swiss city has won the title continuosly. Cities are ranked on an index out of 100 representing the value given to New York.

Well, there is lots of information here:
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/
The CIA keeps TONS of census data on other countries.

The website appears to be down for maintenance..., but I hope it's somewhat relevant.
