When you're young, whatever you might know abstractly, time seems endless, and ageing and mortality are things that you can't really imagine happening to you, or even to your loved ones.
You might try questions like these...
- What is the best age to be?
- When does a person become really grown up?
- What are your hopes for the future?
- What are some things that you find hard to do?
- What matters most to you?

I think this is a good question because politics is an issue that is talked about in every home, even homes of non-voters. Young children hear their parents and grandparents talk and will either mimic their views or form their own opinions (in a home where there is more than one view). Older kids and teens will form their own opinions. In my home, my children are politically aware. We discuss issues seen on the news. I allow for their own opinions and am sometimes surprised at how in tune they are no matter what their opinion is.

or, "If you could wake up anywhere tomorrow, where would it be?"
There was a video project done at the beginning of the year that asked that one question to 50 different people in a variety of cities.

Answered Question

Mahalo is adding a tip to all questions that don't offer a tip.
What is a question I can ask people in different stages of life (i.e. 7-year-old and a middle aged), which will trigger different responses?
I'll elaborate:...
I'm taking a human development class, and we're supposed to interview people at different stages of development. We need to come up with a question that will be answered differently depending on the age group being asked.
An example: What is your definition of a friend?
Obviously a seven year old will answer that differently than a middle aged person.
Any ideas? Thanks!!

I don't know how you'd phrase the question, but one of the biggest differences in people at different life stages is how they experience time and see the future. When you're young, whatever you might know abstractly, time seems endless, and ageing and mortality are things that you can't really imagine happening to you, or even to your loved ones.

When I took a developmental psychology class, the question we had the most fun with was, "Can you become the opposite sex?" The idea of permanace of sex doesn't set in until a child is two to four years old, so asking a girl if she can be a boy and vice versa gets a lot of laughs, but when you get to the older kids most say no. Adults had many answers that had more to do with beliefs than biology and some were very interesting. The other question I got a bit of enjoyment out of was " Do you think you are old?" I was rather suprised with the results.

Why should our next president be elected? I think this is a good question because politics is an issue that is talked about in every home, even homes of non-voters.
