Pen.

~You don't have to sharpen pens
~Pens are binding and permanent, and needed to legally sign documents
~Pens come in a variety of interesting and creative colors
~Pens come in a variety of styles and styles for maximum comfort and flexibility
~Committing to a pen means you're committed to your work, as in crossword puzzles
~ Pens don't have lead that breaks off
~I've never stabbed myself with a pen....

(mechanical) Pencil. I make a lot of mistakes so erasing is easier. I use HB lead so it comes out darker.

But if you asked type, pen, pencil - I would choose typing.

Although my actual physical writing is getting more and more limited, I typically choose pencil. The reason for that is it is a much cleaner look for those of us that make mistakes. An added bonus of using pencil is that it lasts much longer than the inks that are used in the low cost pens of today. So 100 years from now someone can still read my intro to physics notebook.

I also prefer pencil, my back ground in accounting has provided me with a great deal of respect for the pencil. I keep one in my car over the winter since the ink in a pen will easily freeze up.

Pencil, the main reasons are, less plastic in the land fills, and my handwriting is more legible.

Pencils

* we can do lots of mistakes and erase them
* Pencil is the starter for everything like drawing diagrams , diagnosing etc
