Being able to defend yourself verbally requires the same thing being able to defend yourself physically does... PRACTICE and PREPARATION !!!!!
When the other person is talking listen closely to wha thy are saying, make mental notes of inconsistencies and errors but always keep listening. This will give you the ammunition that you need to win an argument. But you must be able to pull the trigger so to speak. That's where practice comes into play. Start by playing out encounters in your mind beforehand. YOU MUST WIN IN YOUR MIND IF YOU ARE GOING TO WIN FOR REAL. Go through these mock enconters several times each time giving your opponent different viable arguments and countering with your own. When you are ready have confidence. Many arguments hae been won with incorrect facts or reasoning because someone had the confidence to say what they felt wth this intangible weapon.
If I have one other piece of advice its this, DO NOT resort to insults or name calling. These thngs are the tools of weak people. It shows that your argument lacks logic and that you lack the ability to mount a defendable position. The occasional barb is ok as it can serve to disarm your opponent but ideally thy wont even realize you got them until your on to your next point.
If it helps practice with your friends, with the tv or in fornt of a mirror. Buck up soldier. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Also, to be better educated in general when someone comes at you, just be informed. This means reading papers, reading the news online. If you feel you have a grasp on what is going on in the world, it will instill confidence and FACTS into your vocabulary, which should make you sound and feel smarter.
Also, there are many resources online that you could try. (I got these from a google search of how to win arguments)

How do you develop your debating skills, think on your feet and win an argument?
How do you learn the thinking skills necessary to be able to win an argument/ debate? It's not exactly a formal debate I am aiming for but the simple things like whenever someone insults me or when I need to verbally defend myself and present my point of view. I always feel like an idiot towards other people who belittle me and tell me that I'm doing things wrong even if I am the right one. Somehow, I still always end up looking as the stupid/misinformed wrong one.like for example even when I try to talk to my sister to do her chores but she wins and I look stupid not being able to stand up for myself that's why I don't even bother with confrontations anymore because I always end up wrong. I am always caught off guard. I don't want to be this way forever.... Help.

In short, the best medicine for this is practice. This could mean just having mock conversations with friends or family. I have used this trick to get comfortable before job interviews and it has worked great (every interview but one went AWESOME). Also, to be better educated in general when someone comes at you, just be informed. This means reading papers, reading the news online.
