In March 2009 three new bacteria were discovered by India scientists from India Space Research Organization in the upper Stratosphere... 15 kms above earth! They were named:

* Janibacter hoylei (in honor of astrophysic Fred Hoyle)
* Bacillus isronensis
* Bacillus aryabhata (in honor of an India astronomer)

In November 2008 Belgium researchers have identified a new bacteria strain that causes dermatitis in desert lizards.

* Devriesea agamarum

In September 2008 a genetically engineered bacteria that could make cheaper to manufacture cellulosic ethanol was released. It was named:

In may 2005 researchers from UB Oral Biologists found new bacteria responsible for the common bad breath, also known as halitosis. These bacteria are difficult or impossible to identify using standard techniques. They were named:

* Atopobium
* Erysipelothrix
* Firmicutes
* Granulicatella
* Solobacterium mooreii

In January 2005 scientists discovered a whole new genus of bacteria that were found growing in a pit of pig manure. They were named:

* Hespellia stercorisuis (in honor of pioneer scientist Robert B. Hespell)
* Hespellia porcinia (in honor of pioneer scientist Robert B. Hespell)
