Most likely because the developers set a minimum size for the window because of the widgets they used or the layout manager the app uses can't handle the funny aspect ratio. Have you tried setting your netbook to a virtual screen size of 1024x768? Another option is to hold down alt, click anywhere on the app window and drag it up to get to the hidden buttons.

Why don't Linux apps scale to the resolution on a netbook? I constantly have buttons that are getting cut off at the bottom of the window.
For example, because the netbook runs at 1024x600, and not 1024x768, the "ok, cancel, next" buttons on Kopete or Pidgin or something get chopped off. Some applications, like Weather Tap's RADAR Lab HD won't correctly launch, either, because of the weird resolution. Why can't the apps scale to fit the screen like apps on Mac / Windows do?
I'm using Kubuntu on an Aspire One.

How do I set the virtual screen size? I know Linux command line fairly well, as I run it on a few servers, but I'll flat out admit, I'm kind of a n00b when it comes to Linux in desktop/graphical mode!
