Like many homeowners nowadays, I haven't been paying my mortgage for about 6 mos. Should I claim my mortgage interest when I file this year?

Your lender usually sends you a yearly mortgage interest statement prior to filing your tax.
Tip for best answer: M$0.50
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think your question needs some clarification - are you saying you should claim all the interest for the time you didn't pay, or just for the time you DID pay?

If you are thinking about claiming the entire years worth of interest, even though you didn't pay for half of it; that is technically fraud, and you would get in trouble if you were audited. But, in all likelihood you would get away with it.

However, if you are asking if you should claim the interest for the months you did pay, I would think there would be no problem with that; you did pay it, you are entitled to the income tax deduction.
