Letter from the U.S. Census Bureau, another waste of money, or did you appreciate the reminder?

The other day I received a letter via the U.S. Postal Service from the U. S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Census Bureau, which read:

"Dear Resident:
About one week from now, you will receive a 2010 Census form in the mail.
When you receive your form, please fill it out and mail it in promptly.

Your response is important. Results from the 2010 Census will be used to help each community get its fair share of government funds for highways, schools, health facilities, and many other programs you and your neighbors need. Without a complete, accurate census, your community may not receive its fair share.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely, Robert M. Groves
Director, U.S. Census Bureau"

Do you think this was an unnecessary waste of money and paper, or do you think it was a good idea to inform the public about the 2010 census? Please explain.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I have to agree with Victoria; this thing seemed really pointless, considering the myriad ways that the US Census Bureau could reach people nowadays. I mean, I think the concept of a national census is worthwhile and has lots of uses and applications. However...

Why not a series of TV ads which tell you to be on the lookout? Facebook and Twitter usage? Again, I can't say that it's a bad idea to inform people and remind them of the upcoming census, but there have got to be better ways to remind us - especially the internet and tv obsessed nation of today. (And yeah, this is mainly for people who don't realize that 2010 is a census year and the census is decennial).

Yes. I think it was a waste of paper and money. First, we do not need the reminder. Just send the thing. Second, the US census is a complete joke, particularly when based on stats in border states such as California. I do not think the government grasps the term "undocumented." This would apply to people who are in the US without documents. The census is gathered via a document. So why in the name of heaven would the thousands of undocumented people in the US suddenly decide, "Oh! The census form! Think I'll fill it out and submit it with all of my personal info so they can come and gather up my entire family and truck us out of here!" All the census will do is put further financial pressure on citizens who do fill it out completely and honestly. Then, we are reported as being less of a population than we actually are (by a long shot) and government funding information will be based on vapor.
