Let's say a person will be traveling around the world. What is the best cellphone option?

- must keep the same number at every location.
- internet is not necessary.
- text messaging *is* necessary.
- it is ok if the option requires to buy a new phone.
- it is ok if option requires to change carrier.
Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Check your route to make sure you have coverage in each area.

If you will be in the city you'll need a phone that is designed for international travel so it can detect and use all the different networks. SIM Cards are the technology of choice. You can actually take your SIM card out of your phone and insert it into other devices (like a public pay telephone) and it "becomes" your phone for the duration.

If you will be traveling through areas without standard coverage you may want to consider a satellite phone. More expensive to make and receive calls but more likely you'll get a signal if that is more important.

I've linked a single site that covers all these topics and gives you a list of phones and technologies to click on to learn more. They may also be your first step in your purchase.

T-Mobile is one "local" company that uses SIM cards (always have) and has a selection of International Phones. Other companies also have International phones. It will come down to features, cost and coverage. Just like when shopping for a local provider.

Best of luck and happy travels!
