Let her sell my bath salts?

I make bath salts by hand and sell them at fairs. My name is on the bath salts and I have a pretty good base of regular customers who look for me at all the fairs I go to every year. A friend has asked me if she can sell my bath salts at fairs on the other side of the country. Part of me wants to let her. I would give her a bulk discount so that she could charge her customers the same price I charge mine. Part of me doesn't want to let her sell stuff with my name on it, though. Should I?

I say go for it, as you are being given an opportunity to expand your business and get your product into the hands of more people.

I'm not sure exactly what it is about having your name on the product that she is selling that makes you uncomfortable. Do you feel that she will misrepresent you or the product, or give you a bad name? If you don't trust her, then I suppose you might not want her selling for you but if you do trust her, I think that you should take advantage of the opportunity. I hope it works out for you!

Well, from a business perspective, it is a great opportunity to get your name out there and make some more money doing what you love. However, from a personal standpoint, I can see where you would be discouraged in doing so. If you are hesitant, the best thing you can do is have a written contact with her stating that she may not change the name on the products or claim any credit for the creation process, she is merely a distributor of your hand made products. You may also want to work something out with her so that if her customers wish to purchase the products outside of the fairs, that they will be referred to you. If people in your area are that crazy about your products, you have to think of how much more business you would be getting from her alone. Hope this helps!

From a business point of view, I would let her sell your bath salts. First of all, she is on the other side of the country, so she will in no way be competing with you as you are only selling them at fairs. Secondly, you can sell more salts by selling large amounts of them to her, even if it is at a discount. So, you will be making money off of her sales. The alternative here is to not sell to her and not make those extra sales and the associated money that comes with the sales. Or, if she really wants to sell bath salts, she could always cut you out of the equation, make her own bath salts, and sell them herself - in this case you make no additional money either.

I would draw up a contract with her making sure that you retain all the rights to sell your bath salts under your name and that you are just allowing her to be a reseller of your bath salts. It should be clear that she is not your partner and does not have any rights to your products or your product name - only that she is a reseller of your bath salts. Taking the right legal steps is the key here. By having her sell your salts on the other half of the country, you can increase your business and make more money from your bath salts.
