In the United States an American citizen is protected from illegal search and seizure by the 4th Amendment to the Constitution, ratified on December 15, 1791.

This amendment was written to prevent Brittish general warrants. Granted to Brittish law enforcement enabling the to search any home they liked for any reason.
Smuggling being a popular profession in the 13 colonies, the colonists were of course against such warrants.

Recent changes in the search and seizure law have made it more difficult for police to search your car during a traffic stop.
