Is there a way to donate my still-living but persistently-vegetative body for research?

I'm completing my Living Will and looking over the options. I'm already an organ donor but I thought that there might be some scientific research that could only be done on a live human body. If I were in a persistent vegetative state, how could I donate my still-living body for such research? I know it is a grisly question, but I thought that there could be something else besides being a medical school cadaver.

I had started writing a response to this when it was first asked, but chose not to post it. Since there isn't much activity here I will post a few things to keep in mind.

For the most part in the United States you cannot sell body parts, you can only sell things that replenish themselves (blood, sperm, etc.). I have a suspicion that many places may treat "donation" and "selling" the same to avoid issues of fraud. How this applies to kidney donations and egg donations I have no idea so there is obviously something I don't know.

My point is that I would make sure you have a competent lawyer that is familiar with this specific subject because I can foresee them writing what you tell them without being fully aware of the special rules that apply to your personal body.

Sorry I can't be more specific or helpful than that, but hopefully it will give you a few extra questions to ask your attorney.

That's a great question and an extremely generous thing to offer up.

I don't think there are any specific ways to do something like that other than putting it in your Living will and making your wishes known to family members. Hopefully, if you are in a vegetative state, people will obey your requests and ship you off to U of M for some research.
