How do you go about finding a mediator or an arbitrator to get in the middle of a dispute between a contractor and customer?

What's the difference between an arbitration and a mediation or an arbitrator and a mediator? Are they the same? Does an arbitrator need to be a lawyer? What is an average price of an arbitrator or a mediator? I'm having a dispute with an independent contractor and would like to have an arbitrator or a mediator. I'm not sure which to choose, and how to go about finding either.

I would check out this site for the National Academy of Arbitrators (NAA). They are a non-profit organization of arbitrators. They have a list of certified members about a mile long. That would be the place to start to find price etc.

Many lawyers are either qualified as mediators or know people who are.

I'm not sure I would like to pick a mediator out of a directory, I'd rather go with a recommendation from someone I know.
