Leather or fabric?

When it comes to furniture, what have you purchased, inherited, or received as a gift? What do you like best, and why?

I knew a woman who wanted a white leather sofa her whole life. When she finally had one, she hated it after a couple of years and got rid of it.

Up until our last couch purchase, we always bought fabric. Our current couch is leather that we bought because we have 5 dogs and we thought it would be easier to keep clean since our dogs are allowed on the furniture.

Although it is easier to keep clean, we found it didn't stand up to the abuse as well as a fabric couch does.

I like the leather better for cleaning, just wipe with water or cleaner if needed but I like that I don't have to replace the couch as often with fabric.

So, I guess you could say that the answer would depend upon who and what the couch is purchased for.

Leather I think is best used as it was born.. as a skin protection. I don't much like it on furniture etc...but a good leather jacket beats just about anything when it comes to even harsh Alaskan winters. Otherwise.. I'm a fabric fan.

I'd prefer to have leather; it's a lot more comfortable and looks a lot better to boot. Besides, fabric furniture tends to get dirty and disgusting really quickly. Give me an old, torn-up leather couch any day over a fabric couch with mysterious stains on it. I'm grossing myself out just thinking about it!

I don't think that I would prefer to have leather. It's hot and sticky in the summer, and cold in the winter....

But what about these??

In the car I absolutely have to have leather. For the home though, everything I have is fabric. A lot of the fancier styles don't actually come in leather. That being said, I do appreciate a chic and modern looking leather couch; I just don't own one.

We recently bought a leather couch. Before that we had fabric and it was always full of pet hair because we have 2 cats and 2 dogs. The leather is easier to keep clean and I just stopped allowing the animals on the furniture. So it's working out well so far.

I've never had any type of furniture but fabric but always thought that leather would be nice. However, I changed my mind when I noticed what my dogs did to my bed. I have a water bed and it has leather railings around the edges. Well after all these years of the dogs up and down on my bed, they have destroyed the leather edgings on my bed and it looks horrible. We no longer have a water bed shop in our city, so in order to replace them I would have to order them online and since they are so heavy, I imagine the shipping would be very costly. I could see how the leather would be easier to clean, if the darn kids would just keep their claws out of it. I guess it's fabric for me.. forever. :-)

Fabric! I hate leather furniture; it's uncomfortable and when it's hot out, I stick to it.

I love the look of leather. I do have leather interior in my car and I love the look plus it is very easy to keep clean. However, facts are facts, summertime it is hot and winter it is very cold. So when it comes to my furniture I have to stick to fabric. It is so much more durable and can take all the rough housing the grandkids can give it.

Personally, I prefer to have leather furniture, as well as leather car interior. The reason being that not only does leather look neater, but it is generally easier to maintain and clean. The first couch my husband and I have ever bought was fabric, a big mistake, considering we had a one-year old child at the time who had just about every accident imaginable on it. He spilled his sippy cup with milk, drooled while sleeping, and even had a leaky diaper on it once. Yuck! I remember scrubbing stains out of the couch daily to ensure that none would remain. Then, 3 years later, we finally invested in an ivory colored reclining leather couch (which by the way we still own, because its quality has allowed it to outlast some of our other furniture). Although things still were spilled occasionally, clean up was easy and typically required only a quick wipe-off of the seats. I also love leather interiors in cars for the same reasons.

Fabric, leather just doesn't hold up to the use and abuse of the traffic in my house not to mention the pets claws. Leather looks nice but I would have to buy a new one every year.
