I'm thinking about learning to play the piano, what kind of keyboard should I get?

It must be light, cheap, have it's own speakers and a full keyboard and be compact, it must also be availible at a major American retailer (Target, Best Buy, etc.) . It doesn't need any bells and whistles, just a full keyboard with a speaker.

Coming from someone with a Music Degree that plays piano, the most important thing you want to watch out for when just being a keyboard to learn piano is that you get the cheapest on that is still Touch Sensitive, which means that how hard to press the notes effect how loud they are. Because if you are learning I would recommend that you would still have the same sensation as actually playing a piano. I have a $150 Casio Keyboard sitting in my room right now. Casio is usually a reliable brand. But in my experience most keyboards work like they are supposed to and last pretty long. Mine has lasted for 6 years so far.

To get a full 88 keys you will end up paying more and with a keyboard that has more bells and whistles than you want. But many keyboard has a button where you can transpose into high and lower keys to access the the rest of the keyboard notes.

These are from target. I actually work at target so I've played the 2 or 3 that they usually have on display in the store.

I remember playing this one in the store and it was really nice. But it may have more features than you are looking for.

$200

If you are not concerned about it being touch sensitive and want something really small try one of these 3

$50

$100

Like I said, I work at target and they always have a few on display in the store. If you want to order them from target website online then it's free shipping for $50 or more. If not you can always play the ones in the store. I hope this helps either to buy one or know what you'll want better.

best of luck....the_brain

Asker's Rating:
• I think I've figured out what I need from looking at those:
Built-In Speakers (Seams obvious but the lady at Best Buy was trying to sell me one without them)
Touch-Sensitive Key
76 Keys

I would test out as many keyboards as you can (within your price range).
What brain said regarding the weight of the keys is important. You should then be able to gracefully go from keyboard to piano without having to get used to it.

Glad you figured it out. No matter what you get they usually all work pretty well and last a long time.

Either the Motif or a Korg, Motif being the first choice

They are the best and have the best realistic sounds for sampling when you are ready create music on them.
