Later this month, Walgreens is going to start selling genetic test kits that are supposed to be able to tell you if you are predisposed for

some illnesses such as Alzheimer's, cystic fibrosis, and Tay-Sachs disease. They are going to sell for around $30. Would you be interested in buying one?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Oops sorry charray as I posted a similar question without seeing yours. I was just as fascinated with the concept of the product and the idea to ask a question about it (great minds think alike).

On the one hand, the price is low enough to satisfy curiosity of these genetic markers, which can actually be a bad point as well. I think there is definitely the possibility for people to panic. On the other hand, maybe finding out a predisposition may make people more aware of their own health. It's one of those double edge sword kind of things. It might open up dialogue with a doctor or it might cause people to go into huge depressions and avoid doctors - with the thoughts of - why bother.

I don't think I will be spending the money. I don't need walgreens to tell me what I know I'm already predisposed to through my own family history and my own health and well-being. (Although I know it's not walgreens telling me but the company that makes them).

I do also worry about this knowledge being used against people. Let's face it, insurance companies look for any reason to drop people, and I don't know how much the new health care plan will help that. Not to mention other potential privacy issues at stake. It just seems like a bad idea to me.

What's next I wonder, home cloning kits?

I don't think I would be interested in buying one. It's a very cool idea, but let's face it, we all have enough to worry about. If it's going to happen, it's going to happen. I would rather not have it in the back of my mind causing me stress. I do find it amazing that this kind of testing can now be done for $30 though.

It might be a good idea to know. Isn't Alzheimer's often mistaken for senility in the beginning? If you knew you were predisposed to get it then you could seek out a diagnosis and treatment sooner instead of just thinking you were getting old.

No I think I would go to a Doctor for this type of info and not some kit in Walgreens. Walmart will probably sell it cheaper in a few months anyway.
