Lately, Vitamin D has become one of the newer dietary supplements that is being advertised. Is it safe to take?

There are a lot of articles and commercials that praise the effects of adding vitamin D to your vitamin intake. It has been suggested for use in treating Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus, and for people with problems with balance. Is there a specific vitamin D that people should take, (D-1, D-2, D-3, etc.)? How much should a person take? Is it safe to take mega doses of vitamin D? What are the benefits of Vitamin D and what are the drawbacks? Can a person get enough Vitamin D from foods or beverages?

According to doctor John Jacob Cannell, Executive Director of the Vitamin D Council, fear of Vitamin D toxicity is unfounded. Back in 1999, Reinhold Vieth, professor at the University of Toronto, asked for evidence that 10,000 units of Vitamin D per day was toxic and he was amazed at the lack of evidence produced.

When conducting animal studies, it was shown that the equivalent amount of Vitamin D to be toxic in humans was 176,000,000 units per day. In all reality, Reinhold Vieth said that toxicity probably occurs when consuming 40,000 units daily. That is the equivalent of taking 100 of the 400 IU tablets per day. The 400 IU tablets are the 100% United States Recommended Daily Allowance for Vitamin D.

So you can see that you'd have to take 100 capsules per day to be in danger, which is simply ridiculous. Even high potency Vitamin D tablets are only 2,000 per day, which is still nowhere close to 40,000 units.

I believe people can get the 100% of USRDA in Vitamin D through foods. If you feel you need more or your doctor feels you need more for health benefits you can take safe supplemental doses like I mentioned above.

Vitamin D is not found in many food products, fortified or natural. A list of the types of foods that do contain vitamin D can be found here and is very small indeed, http://www.algaecal.com/vitamin-d/vitamin-d-sources.html .

Many of the adult population are found to be lacking in vitamin D because it is not a vitamin that is found in most products, like vitamin C. The only way the human body can naturally create vitamin D is when the body is in direct contact with the sun. Lacking in vitamin D is far more dangerous than having a little too much as not having enough can cause depression and suicidal tendencies. Many individuals who have committed suicide have been found to be lacking in vitamin D. It is also possible to get insomnia and brittle bones as well as several other conditions, when lacking in vitamin D.

There is no need to take vitamin D supplements if you are exposed to the sun on a regular basis during the summer, unless otherwise advised by a doctor. Having too much vitamin D can cause problems with the heart, as it causes Atherosclerosis, which is when the arteries of the heart become hardened and this can subsequently cause a stroke. The best way to avoid this if you take cod liver oil as a basis for vitamin D and Omega 3's, is to only take cod liver oil during the winter months and take fish oil as a safe natural alternative, during the summer months.

A healthy recommendation for a daily dose of vitamin D for the ages between 14 yrs - 50yrs of age, when not exposed to direct sunlight is 5 mcg (200 IU) per day, as recommended by The National Institute of Health.
