Laptop battery life

I bought a new laptop the other day (finally) and just wondered, is it always better to let the battery run down before I plug it back into the mains to charge? Will it eventually damage the battery if I just have it plugged in all the time?

I don't mind either way, would just like to know in case I'm worrying unnecessarily :)

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I had a laptop for nearly 10 years that I kept plugged in at least 90% of the time, and I used it a lot. When I did use it on battery power, it seemed to get round about the maximum amount of time out of it before needing to be recharged.

An article on eHow, however, states that, while leaving a laptop plugged in most of the time will not damage its internal components, it will gradually reduce the charge-holding capacity of the battery if it's left installed. See: http://www.ehow.com/about_4596490_keeping-laptop-plugged.html

This was not my personal experience, however. But maybe mine was unusual. I had an HP laptop, by the way.

I was looking around to see if I could find a consensus about whether it's better to remove a laptop battery when the laptop is plugged in, but it seems that the battery will degrade either way and most people don't bother.

Here's a discussion about this topic, in which I found the last post to be the most helpful, because the guy is obviously an expert on Lithium batteries: http://forums.dealmac.com/read.php?4,2628755,2628755

If you do want to remove the battery, though--which, if done right, seems like it can prolong its charge-hold capacity "life"--here are instructions: http://mobileoffice.about.com/od/usingyourlaptop/f/laptopbattery.htm

Hope that helps!

Ah, you see I was going to get an HP as everywhere I went I was told they are the best at the minute for what I need but unfortunately they didn't have one to suit my budget so I got a Toshiba.

Thankyou for your answer, it's pretty much as I suspected - keeping it plugged in can diminish the power of the battery but this is not the case every time.

Hi. I was worried about this too, as no one tells you if you should leave it plugged in or not. But I have mine plugged in most of the time, and only very rarely use my lap top on battery. It hasn't seemed to affect it so far, so think it should be o.k. I have a Fuji-siemens. When I do have it just on battery, it seems to last the time stated. I have heard, you can't really over charge the battery. ( I hope that's the case!)

I've found, even with the 'memory-free' batteries that draining them between chartings give best performance.
I don't 'deep cycle' them (run them down fully) But down below 50%.

I keep my MacBook Pro plugged in all the time and when I need to run on battery, its seems to do just fine. (its about a year old)
I'll also just unplug every once in a while to 'exercise' it

Also the typical life of a lithium battery is about 2 years, so anything past that is gravy.

By taking the battery out this prevents it from "trickle charging", which is usually the blame for decreasing battery life. If it doesn't have access to the trickle charge it can't be affected.
