You should never hit or yell at your puppy. It could cause him to be insecure and fearful. He needs positive reinforcement and over time he will learn what it is you need and want from him. Dogs naturally want to please their owners when they figure out what we expect and desire from them.

What it does do is teach the dog to fear you anytime you pick up an object it views as something it might get hit with.
If your attempting to train a puppy to do something I would suggest that you research a positve and humane method of training a pup the right way.
In the long run you and the dog will be much more pleased with the outcome.

Smacking a puppy with a newspaper or anything for that matter doesn't teach the pup anything positive. What it does do is teach the dog to fear you anytime you pick up an object it views as something it might get hit with.
