knife daily carrying question
i live in michigan, and lately have been thinking about getting a decent pocket knife to carry in my jacket along with a flash light and other little handy things. after reading this it makes it sound like you can't have a knife at all out side of your own house, i am a IT contractor so i end up going all over the place and needing to open shipment packaging and im on the road a lot going places of unfamiliarly to me. would having a pocket knife on me be a felony or just if it was used to attack someone and what about defending against an attack? i do not have any criminal record and im about to turn 21 in a few months.

You should be fine.
From the Michigan.gov website (http://www.michigan.gov/msp/0,1607,7-123-1586_27094-10953--,00.html)
"5. Is it illegal to have a knife with a blade over 3 inches in my possession?
MCL 750.226 No. Michigan law specifies that a person, with intent to use the knife unlawfully against another, shall not go armed with a knife having a blade over 3 inches in length. "
And from the Michigan Legislature site (http://www.legislature.mi.gov/%28S%280doqrejzhwmkrmnsfg4nsiur%29%29/mileg.aspx?page=GetObject&objectname=mcl-750-226)
"THE MICHIGAN PENAL CODE (EXCERPT)
Act 328 of 1931
750.226 Firearm or dangerous weapon; carrying with unlawful intent.
Sec. 226.
Carrying firearm or dangerous weapon with unlawful intent—Any person who, with intent to use the same unlawfully against the person of another, goes armed with a pistol or other firearm or dagger, dirk, razor, stiletto, or knife having a blade over 3 inches in length, or any other dangerous or deadly weapon or instrument, shall be guilty of a felony, punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for not more than 5 years or by a fine of not more than 2,500 dollars."
So, as long as you don't intend to use it unlawfully, it doesn't appear you're breaking the law. I'd recommend a folding, slim box cutter for your IT work: Gerber makes a great one, and you don't have to worry about sharpening or ruining a blade: you just replace it.
