Knicks Trades: Larry Hughes and Chris Wilcox to Knicks--good deal?

Thoughts on Larry Hughes and Chris Wilcox joining the New York Knicks, while Malik Rose, Tim Thomas, Jerome James and Anthony Roberson.

Does this mean Patrick Ewing Jr. is going to come to town thank to two open slots?

Will Stephon Marbury be traded/play this season?

The quick answer: the Knicks added two players who might help them, sent away players that weren't helping, and didn't do any damage to their salary cap situation. Those are all good things.

A bit more detail: Larry Hughes is a pretty good perimeter defender. Put him in the backcourt with Chris Duhon and the Knicks might have the best backcourt defense we've seen at MSG in years. (Of course, that's not saying much.) Hughes was also a very productive player in a wide-open offense with Washington a couple of years ago... he may be a much better fit for D'Antoni's system than he was in Cleveland or Chicago.

Wilcox is freakishly athletic for his size. He'll give the Knicks a big body to put on the Tim Duncans of the world without slowing down the team.

The negatives: Hughes has a reputation for taking bad shots -- and the team already has Al Harrington. And Wilcox has no shooting range at all.

That said, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Ewing Jr., is a very safe bet to be added to the roster now that there are openings. And Marbury will not play for the Knicks this year. They'll try to hold the March 1 deadline over his head to force some concessions on a buyout... or simply release him after March 1. (Players must sign with new teams before March 1 in order to be eligible for the playoffs.)

At this point any trade for the knicks is a good trade - this trade frees up some salary / cap space. Just one more move for the summer of King James...2010 is going to be good!

Born and raised in the Bronx, go to many games (even when Isiah was running the show) and think that Bernard King is one of the most under-rated and under-appreciated players in NBA history...so yes, I am a Knick Fan.

Yes. The Knicks as composed when Donnie Walsh took over needed an extreme roster refurbishment. Clearing out another couple of Isiah Thomas's acquisitions is another step in that direction.

Chris Wilcox has an expiring contract this year and Hughes expires in 09-10, so that is good for the Knicks. They have to clear salary. Hughes can be a decent player but really for the Knicks, it's all about good contracts. They have been in Salary hell forever.

I'd say they're both good trades. Larry Hughes could be good when he's happy, and if he doesn't work out, his contract expires for 2010. Wilcox has shown that he can be good, and again, he has an expiring contract. They finally got rid of that scrub Jerome James, so that's always good. Before Jason asks, no, I'm not a Knick fan. I'm actually a Pistons and Nuggets fan...
