As for the other side of your question, regarding hiding intolerance in religion, that could be applied to any religion at all. Hate gay people? "No, it's just my faith! I'm a good person...really! Believe me even though I say terrible things about gay people!"
Hijabs don't hurt anyone. Worry about the religious and cultural edicts that demand violence against others (say, killing abortion doctors because they're "pro life").
