Just how painful is laser hair removal

I've heard this is very painful. I am considering it on my legs and bikini area. I am wondering if it really is that painful or just some people are more sensitive to the laser hair removal procedure.

With just one pulse, the laser will be able to remove all the hair on a certain patch of skin the size of a nickle but this depends on the specific laser spot size that ranges from 9-18 mm on average.

Different persons has different pain threshold and generally laser hair removal is not much painful than waxing. The only difference is the sensation. It would feel like a rubber band snapping against the skin for a split of a second with each pulse.
For those who are very sensitive an anesthetic cream may be used on sensitive areas. This is usually provided or prescribed in the clinic. But you should be aware that this anesthetic cream is only safe on small areas such as the upper lip, bikini, or underarms and in small quantities only. This is not safe to use in large areas because of its adverse effects.

Pain related to laser hair treatment is a totally subjective phenomenon, differing from person to person. However, the majority of patients describe the discomfort as a mild, hot pin prick or sort of an elastic band snapping against the skin. Anesthetic gel or cream and Aloe Vera gel works effectively to minimize this sensation.
