I just got a Chilean Rose Tarantula. Tried to pet it and it raised its butt. Why is that, is it trying to attack?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think spoon is right that you will need to give it time to get used to you if you want to handle it. It might take some time and that might involve the course of several feedings and you may end up being bitten at some point (although with that spider it won't be really dangerous unless you are allergic).

You might have an OK experience keeping it but just not trying to pick it up. This source says that many experts advise not handling them directly:

"While a tarantula may become acclimated to being held on the hand, if it suddenly runs or jumps it may fall, and the injuries sustained could be fatal. Even a minor fall can kill a heavy bodied tarantula if the abdomen ruptures."

Anyway if you are going to handle it be patient and make sure its not around the time it is molting. And make sure it has a pot or something to hide in.

Since the urticating hairs on the back of the animal are used as a defense it is likely it was giving you a warning. Keep in mind that it can take some time for a spider to get use to it's surroundings and understand that it safe when you are around... give it time.
