Just got a new puppy but don't know what breed, he was a stray. The roof of his mouth is black.

Is a black roof significant to a particular breed or common in any breed?

Having a black roof of the mouth could mean that this puppy has some genetics of a Saint Bernard, a Black Lab or even a German Shepherd. But I'm only at the beginning of the list of dogs that have this trait.
In other words... there are many breeds that carry that gene.

Don't believe any of the old wives tales about the black roof of dogs mouth. Some of the myths are that it is proof that the dog will be aggressive. Others say that it is proof they are 'pure bred'.. well, it looks like you just blew that myth out of the water! Others say it is proof of intelligence.

I think the aggression part stems from the Asian dog breeds that not only had black on the roof of the mouth but black tongues like the Akita and Shar Pei, since both would be considered 'guard' type dogs and are known to bite, at least when they were back in Asia.

Your best bet for finding out what possible mix of breed your special puppy is, is by talking to your Veterinarian. I've been lucky and had great Vets who could at least steer you in the right direction. After all, they're going to see your puppy as he grows and be able to point out some features that might not be apparent yet.

Best of luck with your new puppy. Mutts are ALWAYS the best!

You cannot determine the breed of the dog just by the roof of its mouth. Having a black mouth roof just means he has black pigment in it. And pigmentation has nothing to do with intelligence and breed.
