Probably that it came out in 2008 that the "batteries" that the Pentagon had meant to deliver to Taiwan in 2006 were actually fuses for nuclear warheads.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eU-s96z7h4

"Those helicopter batteries the Pentagon thought it had shipped to Taiwan back in 2006? In March, seven months after the Air Force lost track of six nuclear warheads that were inadvertently flown over the U.S., the Defense Department was informed that the batteries it meant to deliver to Taiwan had actually been fuses used to trigger nuclear warheads. Whoops. Though the shipments contained no nuclear material, this was still a potentially explosive mistake since China considers Taiwan part of its territory, making U.S. arms sales to Taiwan among the most sensitive points in U.S.-China relations." -- http://www.time.com/time/specials/2008/top10/article/0,30583,1855948_1861760,00.html

With all the attention to the election, and voting, one of the greatest scientific theories was proven, that's Einstein's Theory of Relativity E=mc^2 was proven right after 103 years.

Basically proven right. It was proven that it's right in almost every case you can imagine. The only time it actually gets iffy is issues with things we've discovered well after he passed, such as the fact that the expansion of our universe is accelerating, not slowing due to gravity.

I still think this is a big one. I totally agree.

While the Russian-Georgian conflict got news coverage, I think the most under reported news story is the Russian military movements in South America and the Caribbean Sea.

Things such as Russian Warships crossing the Panama Canal -- http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D94REPNO1&show_article=1

And Russian Warships in Cuba -- http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=081215151217.gl11u87v&show_article=1

To understand the significance of this, recall that there was a time when the USA would consider any involvement of Russia in South America as an act of war.

And especially the sensitivity the US once had about Cuba. (Recall the: Cuban Missile Crisis.)

(Going off on the tangent of Russian military expansion) one could even look at things such as the attempts bailout of Iceland by Russia. Where as part of the deal, Russia would take over the former US/NATO military bases on Iceland. http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2008/10/money-goes-geopolitical-iceland-seeking.html

I did not know that John McCain had dumped his first wife after she became crippled in a car accident for a much younger woman until after the election, nor did I know about the Biden gaffe where he said he frequented a restaurant called Katie's on Union street that hadn't existed for 15 years.

Definitely the earthquake in China. It remained a headline for a few minutes but killed thousands. They briefly referred to Yao Ming's charitable donations to a fund he set up to help the orphans, homeless, and childless left behind after the utter destruction of a 7.8 earthquake. This was much more devastating than Katrina and received far less aid from the world.

This wasn't reported at all

The EEOC enables discrimination
they rubber stamp 90% of cases they are supposed to investigate as NO CAUSE without even looking at them--this has been going on for years--they don't even seem to look at the cases they rubber stamp as having CAUSE

and than tehy tell victims who have been robbed of $45000 and are heavily in debt to go pay a lawyer thousands of dollars..

the victims than can't afford medical care and home repiars---this is especially a problem in disability discrimination when the person was in poor health to begin with....and tehi health gets worse

Is there a relationship between the dollar cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to the current world-wide economic crisis?

I have no idea if there is a relationship here, but the cost of this war (even by conservative estimates) is staggering, as is the amount of money lost during the economic downturn. They are both happening at the same time with very little media attention being paid to the relationship.

I was really disappointed that the mainstream media completely ignored Ralph Nader and all his campaign. This article

http://berkeleycarroll.org/news/detail.asp?pageaction=ViewSinglePublic&LinkID=3614&ModuleID=183

makes me a little angry. I'm not necessarily a Nader supporter, but if the media would've paid attention to him and let him debate he would've done a lot better than he did.

(Most over-reported story: Joe the "Plumber".)

Oh, the old alien star destroyer over Minneapolis story might have been interesting to see on mainstream media. Or was Sarah Palin shopping that day, and they had to devote all news crews to that instead?

Great question! It seems that the media tends to get fixated on a just a few stories, and give those all the attention. The answer to this is a matter of perspective, of course. To me, the most under-rated story was the increase in violence and persecution against Christians in India, which may (or may not) have a tie-in to the events in Mumbai from back in November. However, there are many others.
Below is an article on one journalist's take on the best under-reported stories of 2008.
